Today's the first episode in conversation with Wendy Painting, author of Aberration in the Heartland of the Real: The Secret Lives of Timothy McVeigh. In this episode, we discuss Wendy's narrative archetypes to organize the flood of contradictory stories about Timothy McVeigh. This is necessary groundwork for understanding everything that follows.

Bonus episode 30 must be Nick Bryant. I don’t understand his tagging structure anyway

Thank you so much Jimmy! This series finally got me to subscribe. Really excited to go back through the back catelog once I'm through the rest of this series

2023-02-01 13:25:02 1/5/23; awesome 1st show! Great review. I read the book during Spring 2021 in 30 days. I’d add another book to compare with; Lord of the Rings; because of all the different characters, narratives I had to read it multiple times daily to keep up with the flow. You mentioned the epilogue was even good, I’d add the footnotes also. Really enjoyed the apropos intermission music I wanted to donate to Wendy’s Kofi, but I do not deal with PayPal anymore . Are there any alternatives? Anecdotal; mentioned PTC & JFC during the family function at Christmas. My nephew’s cousin , whom I’ve known ever since he was a toddler ( 20 yrs) if I ever heard of MK-Ultra, He said his Uncle Dean told him to ask me. He said he heard about it from watching a Joe Rogan episode with Tom O’Neill talking about his book “Chaos” , and asked me if I’d read it. My eyes lit up & I opened the goodreads app in my phone & let him read my review. Then I suggested a few more books in the same genre, Aberration being the coup de grace, for its breathtaking 720 pgs.

Just signing in to say thanks for this. I was a HS senior in 1995, just a few miles from the Murrah building. We heard/felt the bombing rattle our windows during passing period between first and second hour. Sounded like a long, low clap of thunder on a mostly cloudless day. My dad was an attorney and I was worried he might have been downtown. I spent some frantic minutes trying to get through a busy phone system to hear that he was ok. Someone described OKC as the final pill, and as a relatively new initiate to parapolitics, I appreciate this deep dive into recontextualizing a formative event of my adolescence. I don’t mean to exaggerate the effect it had on me, someone who suffered no material loss, but there was/is a mythos surrounding the bombing for anyone who lived in OKC at the time (and many others, I’m sure) that resisted poking too deeply into the story we were told in the aftermath, a tendency that’s all too familiar after 9/11. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks and this is what finally pushed me to subscribe.
