The conversation between Jack and Locke is what I like the most about this episode. Among Lost fans this "alternative line" was called Flash Sideways

Great reaction, Mike, as always! There is so much to love about season 6, in fact, my favorite episode of the entire series is in S6. You are going to be amazed, confused and delighted all at the same time. When it comes to Lost, what else is new? :)

If it makes it easier, you can refer to on-island vs. off-island. And as Johann commented, it's also referred to as the Flash Sideways, (as opposed to a flash forward or flashback).

He was having so much fun getting to be evil. That look on his face when he says that he wants to go home is just the scariest goddamn thing. Such an amazing performer. His smile to Jack in the sideways later is the diametric opposite. Pure light and understanding. I love him.

That was an excellent episode. No spoilers here, I'm just speculating, but couldn't the black smoke be 'the devil'? Or, if you look at another creation myth, an angel cast down from heaven? Therefore, 'home' would be heaven. The devil doesn't make us do anything, he simply tempts us. Free will.
