wow, alot of ideas tested there. What do you use for the pixel gradients? Because I couldn't imagine you redrawing each pixel gradient over and over again.

I finally purchased Aseprite! It was a great fun to mess with the gradients. Also the pixel-perfect brush is just wonderful!

Do you start with photos you've taken always?

No, I don’t draw from photos. I use references for separate objects when I’m not sure how they look like. Usually it’s bicycles, a/c units, cars, etc. And sometimes I draw from Google Street View, just like in this case.
