End of Development (Patreon)

There is no easy or good way to say this, but I don’t think it can be delayed any longer.

With a heavy heart, I have to call it a day, at least for now, on my attempts to make a game. There are a million excuses I could give you as to why it’s taken so long, and why it’s not something I wanted, but the reality is that for almost a year now I’ve been entirely unable to do any meaningful work on Tale of Tali. Every time I sit down to it I end up blanking and staring at the screen like a dummy. I can only speculate as to why that is, but that is the unfortunate reality. I don’t think I’ll be able to provide any further updates or content for it, at least in the foreseeable future.

As many of you know, there has been pretty much no work done on the game since Feb 2022, when russian invasion of Ukraine started. I have not been hiding that it’s been toiling away at me, as I have friends and family there. There pretty much hasn’t been a month when we didn’t get unfortunate news about people we know or their families dying in this stupid fucking war. It didn’t help that the artist I onboarded to the project in 2021 is Ukrainian, and has been pretty much living in a warzone. You can imagine how that affects the timeline for new game assets. This is also why art for the rest of the main cast besides Tali never surfaced. Again, this is all just a side issue, as even if this work was done, I don’t know if I’d be able to do anything with it.

I feel extremely guilty for dragging this on for so long, and I hope one day I can come back to creative work and rebuild some of the trust I’m inevitably going to lose over this. I do have plans to make a different game, but I doubt I’ll be making it the same way I tried so far, with a public view into the development process (or lack thereof). I’ll likely be aiming to have at least a good chunk of game skeleton done before it sees any light of day.

I’m hoping that this isn’t the end of my game development adventures and that in some time I can come back to this with a fresher mind, and armed with the experience I’ve gathered so far. The Patreon Page is going to be unlaunched next month, I'm not sure if the post would be visible otherwise. The billing will be paused either way.
