I want to point this out whenever we play Utah. How can you vote Golbert Def player of the year when he is the guy the entire league salivates at whenever he is in the game. All plays go toward him when he's in. If he was playing in the 80's and 90's when the 3 point line didn't matter much, fine he is a great shot blocker but now when it's all about PNR at the 3 pt line, he's horrific. You could make an argument that in todays game he's one of the worst defensive players in the league. And agree on Klay shooting while drifting, go back and look at him pre injury and he seemed to always be square. He's too quick to fire most games, but his D is ramping up. Also Porter is still playing way above his salary level, great winning player but his 3 is on break, hope it comes back to early season levels soon.

Yup Klay's shot selection was absolute garbage, even more than usual. This all shows up in his overall efficiency stat, he has one of the worst efficiency on the team especially with Steph off the floor. In games where he isn't making those, that is going to affect our offense. Everyone on that team including Kerr knows his shot selection is wack this season. None of this can be excused with "he is getting into rhythm". If Klay wants to take bad shots, take them at the end of shot clocks. Not 2 seconds in.

Effort, intensity and execution. We bring those three things we win against any opponent. Kings ain’t gonna roll over so I hope we come ready for a dogfight. Still need Ws. Steph ain’t coming back to bail these dudes out till the post season. This was statement game. Huge win. When we lose but play well it’s no morale victories but when we win in the clutch it’s it’s all luck.

Ballin Forever

Im not too fond of the shot selection by Klay either.. But i think for GSW to win it all... we need Klay making tough shots.. Especially when Steph and Poole isnt on the court... When steph and poole is on the court.. klay should absolutely keep the ball moving for better shot opportunities... But because we dont have a big we can dump the ball down to ... and because we dont have an equalizer like a KD or Giannis or Jokic or Embid.... we need Klay to be able to make at least 4-5 crazy shots a game.

Gobert isn't bad in PnR or on the perimeter in general. Look at 5:10 for example. By design Utah wants him to drop instead of hedging even though he could easily get closer to the pick. Their perimeter defenders just aren't very good at limiting the number of poisons. Gobert's real problem is his offensive game is just too reliant on easy shots, he can't even hook shot over people.

100% with you on Klay's shot selection. Double edged sword that he's gotta shoot at that volume to enter that zombie mode; and it's tricky to know if it's worth it. Getting a 37-point quarter Klay or Game 6 Klay is super exciting; it gets the crowd hyped, gets the talking heads off their seats, surely gets more fans, and definitely makes unforgettable nights if not history. Now using one of your favorite phrases, "but at what cost". Did he get there because he chucked up a house worth of bricks? Did it cost the development of JP, JK, and Moody, or slow down their development for a year? Did it cost us a handful of games or a critical game during our last title run(s)? I guess we'll never know. I agree with you, Klay may have carried us, but I didn't like it at all. We hold rooks to high standards of good fundamentals and would never allow such terrible fading shots; a rook would get benched immediately, yet we allow Klay to keep taking these tough fades. Is this enabling Klay to practice tough shot making and ultimately going to help us in the finals run or is this just building bad habits that's going to cost us a close game? Is Klay good enough of a shooter to practice shots this tough? I don't think so. Ultimately, I think Klay is not getting the separation he used to because: 1. The league has become even more 3-point happy in the 2 years he was absent and as a result defenders smother the 3-point line more than before 2. He's not sharing the court with Steph and let's not forget, KD 3. We no longer have a threat in the paint (previously Javale, Festus, Bogut), so even more focus on the 3 point line as we no longer have inside-out attacks 4. He is not as quick as before 5. We no longer run elevator screens When he takes squared up threes, particularly from offensive rebounds or scramble plays, he looks really good: balanced, straight up and down, vintage. How do we get him more of those? Maybe he plays on the weak side more and we work on a ball handler that can drive and kick? Maybe he plays as the trailer like KAT instead of sprinting to the break or corner? Whatever the solution I hope Klay either becomes super-human and starts making a high percentages of these bad shots (unlikely), or he finds ways to get easier and better shots This win was such a morale boost! I am hyped about JP, have been since his rookie year despite his struggles, I really hope we get to keep him.

Isn't bad in PnR? I'll agree Utah doesn't think he can play well enough out of the lane to justify him doing it but that was our entire offense, getting him in PnR. If he was even big man decent on D he could show and then retreat down low like Draymond does. He's just way too slow. I'll say this I'd take any one of their 3 bigs on the Warriors right now.

It’s like people forgot who klay thompson is. He shoots crazy shots. He and Steph broke the stigma of winning A championship as a jump shooting team. But naa this offense needs less klay shots and More Iguodala and bjelica threes please. 😂 relax.

athleticalchemy

Nah this ain’t the same shot selection. He is shooting like when he would when he was hot. But now it’s just the baseline

Ok true he’s shooting heat checks out the gate lol but I also Think When Steph plays his overall Shot attempts will decrease. To me It looks like Klay is trying to find his rhythm in a league that left him behind. He wants to prove that he not only Belongs but that he is a cut above. I can’t bring myself to bet against that dude.

athleticalchemy

I feel you… if anyone can get away with it it’s klay. But still got acknowledge it. It’s almost also like he knows, no one is gonna say shit too me because of what I been thru

Hey Alch, I was at the Utah game and I have a few observations. Wigs got lost watching the crowd sometimes when jp was dribbling or when he wasnt involved in the play. It was almost like he forgot where he was and snapped back to reality like oh shit im playing basketball. His focus is somewhat concerning to me. Dray was barking at the ref from the start. I think you put it the best when you said he talks to the refs like some people talk to cops. As if they’re not humans. Someone has to tell him. Last but not least, the crowd was super into it. Chase has good acoustics. The defense chants were deafening and the overall vibe was amazing.

athleticalchemy

Nice! One you won’t forget… glad to hear what’s coming across on tv is real. Sounds like a good home court. Dray is objectively obnoxious

Loved the Klay carnage. His confidence to shoot even when he's bricking has taken off pressure from other role players - they're all quietly getting off slumps (Wiggins, Bjelica, Lee). He'll win you one game in a series. The rest can win the remaining 3 😜 Looks good going into the playoffs

totally agree. I think at least for now, he may be best as a spot up shooter. Nowadays his shot after an off screen running is always unbalanced. Maybe it is a good for shot for old klay, but now i would rather let Poole take that shot.

Chip Tingle

Getting to this one late, but always appreciate your work, Alch! Klay/JP chemistry in the big picture is just damn beautiful to witness. If this trio including Steph can play D, the ceiling for lethality is mind boggling, along with arguably extending the two vets’ careers. I like the way you’re coaching up Klay even on an electric finale night like this. I actually do believe Kerr and staff coach shot selection with him based on public comments, but maybe fighting and clawing back to form has completely taken over his game mind right now. Still so interesting to observe and ride with this legend. You know I’m diggin the fact Beli has been able to step up recently on both ends. I agree w those whom cite Dray’s return as part of this, both in games and practices. Seeing his confidence level in the Sac game last night had me doing double takes. We’re obviously going to need him! The impact of GPII, Andre, and OPJ is so inspirational. The challenges they’ve worked through to be immediate difference makers and energizers on the court in their roles….Whew Lawd! Hoping we can keep the D intensity as a fundamental identity, and let all else flow from there….from the JUMP! Wiggs can be a mystery wrapped in a riddle…but D and driving to the hole gauge him for me. Our punchers’ chance lives on. Go groove!

I’m an Econ guy. All about incentives. Can we PAY Wiggins $20,000 or whatever PER DUNK he has in every game? Not only would it save all his blown bunnies but it would give the crowd and the team that emotional boost that he’s capable of but not disposed towards. PAY HIM TO DO WHAT WE WANT. Andrew Dunkins 2023!

Anyone else spot the JTA reaction when Clarkson got ‘hung’ at the rim? 😂
