You are correct that this is based on a novel, but this film is just based on book 1 out of 6 in the series. I recently bought a digital copy of the whole series to read. Now as for the demon in this movie. I am just speculating, but I think these demons normally wear a body until they are either bored of it or it has broken down for whatever reason and then swap to a new body like the demon did in the 70s as was stated in the news report and when he confessed over the phone to the main character. So since he was in love, he wanted to maintain that form rather than body swap to a new life. Which is why he started hot swapping parts like you would components on a computer to keep it going. I am willing to bet that when the wife would have die he would have moved on and resume swapping bodies again. I will see how correct I am when I begin reading the series. Glad you liked the movie. I think unique is the best way to describe it and is probably why it has stuck with me for so long. I think many people should see it just for that moment with the ice fishing.
