The Navy, Marine Corps and Army all have their own air divisions. Since the Marine Corps and Army are infantry, their planes/helicopters are geared towards infantry support. The Marine Corps and Army also have fighter planes to protect their other planes and helicopters. Navy planes are a mix as an aircraft carrier can project any kind of power in a 1500 mile radius. The Air Force is land based and is the only military with heavy bombers, like the B-52 and F-111 (both of those planes have been around for 60 years and have recently been given upgrades to make sure that they keep flying through 2050). So, each state also has an "Air National Guard" to support their guard troops. In addition, there is an entity called the Civil Air Patrol. The Civil Air Patrol used to be mainly used to find lost private planes, but with recent electronic advances, the "search and rescue" part of CAP has been scaled way back. Still, CAP is a great way to get an aviation education as a kid can join at age 12 (used to be ten, fifty years ago). CAP cadets can get to spend part of their summers on a US Air Force base as the CAP is listed an "Air Force Auxiliary."

If I were to teach a course about World War 2 in school, I would do it with the following movies: 1) Battle of Britain-does an excellent of telling the story about the failed one year attempt by the Germans to establish air superiority over England. 2) Sink the Bismarck-Tells the story of how and why England committed 2/3 of their fleet to sink one German battleship that threatened England's supply lines. 3) Tora Tora Tora-tells the story about Pearl Harbor from both the Japanese and American perspectives. 4) Thirty Seconds over Tokyo-in April 1942 sixteen American land based bombers took off from an aircraft carrier and bombed targets in and around Tokyo. This raid shook up the Japanese so bad that they made a series of bad decisions. 5) Midway (1976). The Japanese committed to this battle because of the raid on Tokyo. Unfortunately for the Japanese, the Americans had cracked a part of the Japanese radio code and were ready for the attack. 6) Patton-tells the story of the US campaign against the Germans in North Africa, Sicily and Europe. 7) The Longest Day-This movie is about D-Day. 20 of the 30 lead actors in this movie were World War 2 veterans and 3 were actual D-Day veterans. This movie makes you realize that Saving Private Ryan was a cheap and untruthful knock off of The Longest Day.
