A great blend of Alien Nation (1988) (stranded aliens), the Fly (1986) (transformation), and The Running Man (1987) (media manipulation). Evil dad to daughter: "Everything will be ok." Phone rings...everything is NOT ok! Christopher saying he would return in 3 years would have been about the right amount of time for a sequel we really wanted.

Others have mentioned "Alien Nation" (1988) for a different take on the same premise. But they haven't mentioned that it is a buddy cop movie starring Mandy Patinkin (as an alien) and James Caan. I doubt it would ever win any polls, but y'all might want to just watch it on the side. And, it spawned a full season of a TV show back when TV shows were 20+ episodes. Unfortunately, the TV show was canceled unexpectedly, so the first (and only) season ends on a cliffhanger.
