Speaking of baseball and grenades, recently I learned something I found fascinating. Lt. Buck Compton was an All-American catcher at UCLA in 1942. So when he threw that un-lobbed grenade at the fleeing Germans at Brecourt, it was like trying to throw out a guy stealing 2nd base. He also did really fumble that other grenade that landed right next to Joe Toye. Compton lived a pretty amazing life. UCLA All-American. Platoon leader in Easy Company. LAPD detective. LA district attorney who convicted Sirhan Sirhan, and California Court of Appeals judge. He was teammates on the UCLA team with Jackie Robinson, so maybe Compton was just the second best player on that team.
