The bit at the end wasn't about Winters' grandson. It was a story that Myron "Mike" Ranney told Winters in a letter he wrote him. Ranney's grandson asked him that. Ranney was featured more in the first few episodes and was one of the men decorated for taking out the guns at Brecourt Manor on D-Day.

Another anecdote, Lewis Nixon III came from an influential family. His grandfather founded Nixon Nitration Works but was also heavily involved in shipbuilding. He graduated from the Naval Academy and was the lead designer of the first three 'modern' battleships built by the US Navy. After designing them he left the Navy and took over the lead job on constructing them at private yards. He was also involved in the design and building of the first submarines for the Navy, and later took part in the investigation of the sinking of the Titanic. A lot of history in that family.
