I only just discovered you did BoB way back so I'm catching up - not sure if anyone is gonna read this, but: As much as I love BoB and rate it 12 out of 10 - I did some research and figured out they got Norman Dike pretty dirty, maybe it's because the story is told ONLY from the perspective of Easy company. Lt. Dike was as an accomplished soldier, definitely not a coward. Before taking over Easy he "organized and led scattered groups of parachutists in the successful defense of an important road junction on the vital Eindhoven-Arnhem Supply Route against superior and repeated attacks, while completely surrounded" and in Bastogne itself "he personally removed from an exposed position, in full enemy view, three wounded members of his company, while under intense small arms fire". Apparently the man was hesitant to make life-or-death decisions for a company he was assigned to (not the one he served with from the beginning), that sure would explain why "he made no decisions", even if his reasoning was... faulty. During the Assault on Foye he didn't panic out of the blue – he was hit in the initial minutes of the attack and that's what stopped him. –––– I understand the dramatization choices that were made for the TV series, but I often think it would have been even better, if Dike was portrayed as a tragic, not useless and unlikeable character.
