The Elves go West to take boats to Valinor, which is as you say, basically heaven. Only they can reach it. Others who may try sailing there will never find it because it's basically in the sky, and the path to it is only revealed to those that are invited. The reason for this is that Arda (the world) used to be flat, but was made round so that Valinor could no longer be reached by mortals. The Númenóreans (ancestors of Aragorn and the men of Gondor) were the last mortals to come close to reaching it.
