If you go to a big music festival, there's a good chance you won't actually get to hang out with any of the musicians who are playing, but if you go to a bit academic conference, it's likely that almost everyone you meet there will be presenting their work. In fact, it's uncommon to meet someone who *isn't* giving a talk at an academic conference.

Academic conferences are quite different to festivals, fan cons and industry conventions. In this 21st bonus episode, Gretchen and Lauren take you into the world of the academic conference. Why do people pay to travel and present their research? What's the difference between giving a talk and giving a poster? And how do you meet other people?

Plus: we're taking advantage of both being in the same place at the same time to record a special bonus Q&A episode for patrons! Normally, we ask $10+ patrons for bonus topic ideas, but here we're opening up the floor to all patrons for your shorter linguistics questions! Let us know in the comments below, using patreon's direct message feature in the sidebar, or by emailing contact@lingthusiasm.com before November 15th so we get them in time to record.

We'll see some of you very soon at the liveshows in Melbourne and Sydney! If you haven't claimed your free patron tickets yet, you can do that here. If you have, we've got your name safe on a list at the, and we'll be sending out email reminders closer to the show.

We're also hitting our two-year anniversary this month! In celebration, we want to help new people find the show -- there are still people out there who would be totally into a fun linguistics podcast in their ears but don't even know we exist yet! Plus, if you tag us in your rec on social media by the end of November, we'll thank you by name in our special anniversary thank you post! This episode was soooo informative!! I have a question, could you possibly do a discussion on the pros and cons of getting a Ph.D? I have been contemplating this for so long and the job market for those with Ph.Ds is honestly what’s holding me back. Thanks!!

You're in luck! Have you listened to bonus 15 yet? I think it may be what you're looking for already! (Though let us know if you still have questions afterwards!)

I always think academic conferences (particularly national ones) are a bit like weddings. A bunch of people who rarely see eachother, get together, there's lots of awkward small talk, then you hang out with people your own age. There's then a meal, drinks and (sometimes) dancing. The match is even better when you think about academia in terms of family trees, with PhD supervision as the link between people. I know some of my PhD siblings now, even though we didn't do PhDs at the same time. The elder siblings also tend to look out for the younger ones!
