I've watched this series many times and I still don't know everything about their relationship. In that way it's like real relationships. You can never know exactly what's in someone's heart. Everyone has baggage and it's all different so relationships can't be pigeon holed the way they are in Hollywood movies. All the relationships in this show are like that, full of ambiguity and contradictions. That is the heart of the show and what makes it so powerful. I even have sympathy at different points for the villains and that's really confusing. They aren't demonized. They're just damaged people behaving badly.
