Unsalted Pecan

I had read that JYP got some heat for his comments towards Riria but I dont know how much, it was tough for me to watch as well. Suzu was awesome, I love her.

Imo in this industry being blatantly honest is the key. First of all you give the person that is being criticised a taste of what their career would be like. People are not always going to be nice and pet you to accommodate your feeling when you're under the spotlight. If you can't take it you're not cut for it. Being an idol is much more than just being a performer. Whether we like it or not this is how it is. They are supposed to be the flawless/perfect edition of a human being. Also being blatantly honest is much more effective when you try to help someone reach a certain goal in the shortest amount of time possible rather than beating around the bush trying not to hurt their feelings. And lastly for JYPs case it's "his company" , it's his way or the highway as it's for every business out there when it comes to being interviewed for a job especially when it's a cut-throat business like the entertainment business. JYP is constantly getting hate for every reason imaginable but people fail to realise the impact he's had on K-Pop as we know it today.

Suzu's look (and sort of her dorkiness?) reminded me of Jeongyeon, and her dance showed big girl crush potential. The weight thing is obviously touchy and for good reasons. And where frankness crosses into meanness or cruelty is subjective. Having watched Sixteen, and Nizi Project, and a lot of other JYPe content, I think JYP handles criticisms in general and about body conditioning in particular fairly well. I think his comments to Riria come from her already having been a performer. Did she already know about body conditioning and voice scale training but lacks the commitment to do the everyday work to be an idol, or does she not know about these things because she hasn't been properly trained? CW mentioned Jihyo in Sixteen.. that photographer asking "Why do you look so fat?" in the middle of a photoshoot was not helpful. There was nothing Jihyo could do with that "advice" to change how fat she did or didn't look then and there, and it just tanked her confidence for the rest of the shoot. Dumb and cruel. (But Jihyo is awesome, so her next song choice was "All About That Bass". So take that, scrawny mean photographer!) There are cultural differences too.. Also in Sixteen, Jihyo's mom said something like "It's too bad you didn't debut a couple years ago, you looked so pretty then." Ok, thanks mom. 🙄 When JYP mentions conditioning he does so as a goal to work towards, knowing that it takes incremental improvement over time. But he's also not a softie.. he does expect people to work on the things he tells them. Anyway he really does seem to be coming at this from a dancer/physics perspective rather than just for aesthetics' sake. Personally I thought Ryujin looked more attractive during "Icy" and "Wannabe", before she lost weight for "Not Shy", but I probably have to admit that her moves do seem quicker and lighter now. And then there are idols who have to work to put on weight for both health and aesthetic reasons, like Lia and Miihi. Anyway, a tough subject, but it is a very tough job.

I'm really tired of the weight thing because it's tangled up in the political correctness and wokeness that is poisoning Western culture. It isn't part of Korean culture. Being the optimal weight is just a qualification for the job as it is for any athlete. Olympic athletes all concentrate on weight control as part of their training and dancing is no different. Did I feel sorry for Jiyho? Yes, I did, but she did gain a lot of weight after her initial debut was cancelled. She lost all that weight in the months after Twice debuted and now she is as fast and agile as Momo. Being able to control your weight also says a lot about your character and your self discipline. If you can't control all your appetites you won't survive in the world of the Kpop idol.
