Rivella remained silent and only after a while, with a hint of impatience, he answered in a bland tone, "I'm sorry, Mr. Prosecutor, but I don't know what you're talking about. And before I see my lawyer, I refuse to answer any questions."
Although Carlton had expected that Rivella would not cooperate with the investigation, he couldn't help but feel annoyed when he saw how uncooperative Rivella was.
He continued to threaten and coax Rivella, hoping to obtain some evidence that would be beneficial to the investigation.
However, Rivella only coldly smiled to himself.
He knew exactly what Carlton was thinking and why.
Indeed, Rivella used to be like most people, keeping some of the bribes he received and some evidence of his personal enrichment within the military trading company he worked for, even storing them in some hidden places in his house.
But since the last military trade scandal broke out and there were rumors that the higher-ups were preparing to investigate Rivella, he had started to destroy the physical evidence he had kept and had transferred some of his property and valuables under his name.
So although Carlton and his team had caught Rivella off guard before dawn today and even searched his residence thoroughly, the fact was that they had not found any evidence they were looking for.
Seeing that Rivella was unresponsive, Carlton lost his patience after trying to persuade him for a while.
He warned Rivella with a cold tone and a frown, "Mr. Rivella, it seems that you are still holding on to a considerable amount of luck. Humph, let me make it clear to you now that the situation you have caused is already out of control. How big is it? Even if the military intervenes, they cannot protect you. The president has personally issued a strict order to the highest prosecutor's office, and my colleagues and I have formed three investigation teams to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the Nebrina Trading Import and Export Company, the military, and the prison. Apart from cooperating with us to reduce your punishment, you have no other choice!"
Rivella's face twitched slightly, but he didn't say anything.
Carlton thought that Rivella had finally become afraid and was about to threaten him again when suddenly a police car rushed in and stopped abruptly right next to them, almost causing a collision with the car in front.
The driver was obviously startled and immediately slapped the steering wheel with his hand, causing the horn to emit a sharp scream.
Carlton was also startled. He was worse off than the driver because the driver had fastened his seat belt, while he, sitting in the back seat, had not. As a result, when the car suddenly stopped, he and Rivella were thrown forward by inertia and their heads hit the back of the front seats hard.
"What happened?" Although it didn't hurt much, Carlton was still caught off guard and asked the front seat in a grumpy voice.
"It seems there's been a traffic accident. The guy in front suddenly hit the brakes and I almost couldn't avoid hitting him..." The driver explained quickly and then opened the car door. "I'll go check it out."
On the back seat, Rivella was suddenly hit by the sudden stop, and his head spun for a moment. But when he recovered, a smile appeared on his face as he turned to the noisy area in front of him and said, "Finally, have they come? I've been waiting for so long..."
"Finally come?" Carlton was sitting next to Rivella, so even though Rivella only muttered softly, he heard it clearly and his face changed instantly. "Who are they?"
"Hehe..." Rivella chuckled, not knowing whether it was because he had completely let go of his worries or not. His smug expression was evident as he turned to Carlton and said, "If you had caught me, even they would have felt troublesome. After all, I know too many secrets about them. So they must have come to save me..."
Rivella's words were cut off by a slight explosion. The windshield of the police car they were in shattered, and then the upper half of Rivella's head exploded like a rotten watermelon, splattering blood and brain matter all over Carlton.
"... Mine..." Rivella's lips continued to move, completing the last two words before collapsing onto Carlton's body.
In an instant, Carlton was hit by the nauseating stench and nearly vomited. After a brief mental pause, he quickly realized what had happened and pushed Rivella's body forward, then looked towards the windshield. Immediately, a bullet hole and the circular, radiating cracks caused by the impact of the bullet on the windshield stood out prominently.
Carlton's pupils shrank suddenly. He quickly opened the car door and got out of the car. He crouched behind the car door to avoid possible bullets and took out the police radio to call for help: "Calling the Security Bureau, this is Carlton. The operation to arrest Rivella has failed. He was shot by a sniper on the road..."
Before he could finish his sentence, a loud explosion came from the front. Flying debris, including stones and other unidentified materials, hit Carlton's vehicle multiple times, startling him.
He yelled into the radio, "Calling the Security Bureau, I suspect armed personnel who shot Rivella are still nearby. We need support immediately..."
The prosecutor's office was not a violent agency, so their arrest operation was only possible with the strong assistance of the Rio de Janeiro police and the state security bureau.
Obviously, the sudden sniper attack and explosion made Carlton realize that they were in big trouble. In fact, just as he was trying to peek out of the car window to assess the situation, the explosion sounded like a signal flare. Before he could react, the sound of gunfire and more frequent explosions immediately followed.
Amidst the explosions and gunfire, occasional terrified curses and screams could be heard. Carlton was too busy to respond to the radio and carefully peered out of the car window, trying to see what was happening.
The next moment, a silver-gray monster with two shoulder-mounted weapons firing continuously at nearby police cars jumped down from a prosecutor's car, and its front hooves were in the position of its back.
Shocked, Carlton opened his mouth and couldn't even hear the intermittent voice coming from the radio, which suddenly made a crackling sound: "Security Bureau... Please be patient... We will arrive later... What the hell... Are they crazy... This is a riot... Support is needed everywhere..."
