Full tutorial with melody and backing track.

Today we are going to learn how to play Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer. This is a full ukulele tutorial meaning we will not only learn how to strum the song and sing it but we will also learn how to play the melody and then we will play through the melody at the end of the song. Rudolph first appeared in a department store magazine in 1939 before becoming a song ten years later in 1949. The song writer, Johnny Marks, interestingly is the brother-in-law of Robert May, the guy that who actually wrote the original story. Gene Autry recorded it and the song went number 1. Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Burl Ives even the Chipmunks have covered this classic song. It has an introduction based of a poem that was in public domain, then it goes into an AABA song format. The chords used in the A progression is very basic with just C and G chords but if you want to you can also add a passing chord, the dim7, in there to give the harmony a jazz like movement that is very nice. The B part has a much more dynamic chord section.

Will improve

  • Playing melody in C
  • Secondary dominant chords, the D7
  • Extended chords, CMaj7, G7
  • Quarter note triplets
  • AABA style pop jazz songs
