Very sorry for the delay, this video was starting to feel cursed between tech issues and internet problems, on top of being a massive 3-1 forty minute lesson but here it is.

This feels like three tutorials in 1

  • The beginner strummer song
  • All the rag time licks and fills
  • The melody for the entire song

Today we are going to learn how to play When I'm Sixty Four by The Beatles. This one was written by Lennon and McCartney, which is arguably the best song writing that the Beatles do. This song has a classic rag time feel and songs like this are a ton of fun to play on the ukulele and sound great. The reason this lesson is so long is because I am essentially stacking three tutorials on top of each other. The first one is a strummer version of the song that walk through every single strum in the entire song as well as all the keywords so you can see exactly where lyrics match the chord changes. In the second phase of the tutorial I will break all the fun licks that really give it that lovely big band sound and swagger. Fills over the G7 when there isn't any melody, using 3rds and 6ths to play walk ups and walk downs that match the melody, the low baritone saxophone riffs that really give the song so much energy and then at the end of all this I am going to teach you the melody as well so you can make a chord melody versions, play it with a friend or just use the information to learn how to sing it better.

Will Improve

  • Swing Strumming
  • Right hand muting
  • Dominant 7 Arpeggios
  • Riffs for rhythm
  • Double stops
  • 3rds
  • 6ths
  • Slides
  • Borrowing chords
