Today I am teaching you how to play Highway to Hell, full song with a play-along at 116 BPM, the speed of the song, plus drum beat MP3 files to download and 5 bonus licks inspired by Angus Young

Right off the bat I want all my viewers to know that I respect your religion and your beliefs, it is just a fun song to play and from a fun band to play so I wanted to teach it.

The song has a verse and chorus and after the second chorus a little bridge, seems easy, right? Well... buckle up. I tried teaching it a week ago and I just couldn't not stay in time for the life of me, all the off beat strumming and syncopation and only down strums, it was a battle. To make it a little bit easier I teach the tutorial literally strum for strum, exactly where they are in the measure, counting out loud, and then I even have a play along with the pieces at 80 BPM so you can get it a little slower with some drums and then again at the very end at 116 BPM, just like the song. I have included the 80 and 116 drum beats to practice, I would practice it with the 80, then try and play with the recording, and then try to play with the 116 solo.

The song has a pretty cool solo that isn't that tricky to play but the key makes it a little hard to play it verbatim on the ukulele. To remedy this I have included five amazingly fun licks inspired by Angus Young, some much easier than the others, some being 1 bar and some 5! You can use those licks with this song or any blues or rock song in the key of A. The licks fluctuate being major and minor so they might no be the best to play a traditional solo in the key of A with.

Will Improve

  • Borrowed chords (The G chord, or the bVII)
  • Rock'n'roll all down strumming
  • Syncopation
  • Timing and rhythm in general
  • Quick chord changes
  • Long rests
  • Taking a solo while jumping across the stage on one leg with the other straight out while wearing a boys school uniform
  • E5 Power chord
  • Licks that use both the major and minor chords
  • A variety of bends
  • Double stops
