This is a new concept I am trying that is genre based. Essentially it would be play X in the style of Y, and today it is play Rock in the style of Chuck Berry, if there are other genres and legends that you would like to try and play like let me know!

MP3 Backing track included for ALL Patreons

Today we are going to learn how to play the Ukulele like Chuck Berry. I am playing on an electric ukulele but that doesn't mean that you need to play on an electric ukulele. I am also using a low G, but again, low or high G, any ukulele can follow along with this lesson that includes a high G soprano.

One of the biggest characteristics of Chuck's playing is that classic Johnny B. Goode lick, a major pentatonic double stop with a bend from the 4th interval up to the 5th interval. We will look at that, how to integrate it into a rhythm in the key of D and put it all into a full 12 bar progression. Rock'n'roll, specifically early rock, followed the 12 bar format quite closely, what they did over those 12 bars however was quite different.

Will Improve

  • Playing in the style of Chuck Berry
  • Understanding of rock music
  • Triplets
  • Double stops
  • Exotic shuffles
  • The 13th chord
