Today we are going to learn how to play "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan on the Ukulele. I would consider this a beginner song, having said that, it is a beginner song that will test our beginners. It has a 20 measures verse, 4 more than normal, that uses 5 different chords and 4 different chord progressions as well as a variety chord lengths from 2 beats to 4 beats. To help the beginner out we will be strumming the song in 8ths, but if you are a more advanced player you could do some very cool stuff with this song by strumming in 16ths.

There are so many amazing covers of this song, do you have a favorite? I am a pretty big fan of Green Day, I've seen them 3 times live and Dookie was my first tape... and CD! I kind of froze in time with them album wise and really only knew the first two underground ones and the 3 first major label ones, I had no idea they covered this song, and it is a pretty fun version of it, very surprised to see that. Jimi Hendrix cover of it from a live show... this guy had a knack for making Bob Dylan's song something really cool. I still think Bob's version was better than Jimi's on this, I can't say that about All Along the Watchtower.

You can add to this song, there is some basic fingerpicking ideas in there for the more advanced player but the song has some electric guitar layered over it in the rhythm section. In the parts of the song that had more space from the lyrics you can use arpeggios and licks in the C major pentatonic and C Major scale to add some personality to your cover.

Will Improve

  • Changing chord duration
  • Varying Strum Patterns
  • Changing Chord Progression
  • Singing in the Middle of the Measure
  • Fingerpicking in 8ths

Dylan has been one of my favorite artists for years. Not as long as I’ve been a KC Royals fan. Cool to see them together. Thanks for this lesson.
