Don't be fooled by the intro, this is for both slide and non slide players!

Today we are talking melody, one of the most recognizable melodies in the world over the last 300 years, some scholars argue as even old as 500 years. It is mind blowing that this song isn't public domain and I have no idea how it is owned by BMG, that is about as vulture as copyrighting "Thank You" or the Happy Birthday song, which was done, but hey, that is a different video for a different day.

The melody is 16 bars and we are going to break it down 4 bars at a time. We will first walk you through it note for note, taking our time and then doing a slow play along while counting it out loud, after that we will put that to a backing track and play through it. If you want to continue to have some fun and push yourself we with then walk through the melody with a slide as well. I have prepared a bonus video for Patreons only that breaks down the theory of this melody as well for aspiring song writers. The song is played in the key of A minor, which really makes the chord choice interesting as it introduces the F# in the D chord and the G# in the E chord, as well as the melody at the very end of the song.

Will improve

  • Playing in A Aeolian (Natural minor )
  • Mixing the A Harmonic Minor
  • 6/8 Melody
  • Using Leaps
