Rhythm, a lot of time we think of rhythm as strumming but the shuffle is a great example of how we can totally rethink our concept of what rhythm is in general. To really nail the groove make sure that you give it a little bit of swing.

I'm so lost. From the very beginning. My G7 doesn't look like your G7. Mine looks like an inverted G. Fingers on 1st fret, E string, 2nd fret A and C strings. But this doesn't look like that.

Tyler Austenfeld

Hi Catherine, the G7 you are playing is a G7 chord, and when strumming a G7, that is what you would use. It is important to know though that is not the only way to play a G7, when learning we think “how can that be a G7, this is a G7?” That is a good question and the answer is with four notes and four strings we can actually play the G7 in a lot of different ways. Taking it a step further a shuffle rhythm is a two note chords, these two note chords are created by playing the most important notes instead of all the notes. That’s what this is, so you are substituting a G7 chord with this G shuffle sound, which is your middle finger on the 3rd fret of the E string and your index planted on the 2nd fret of the C string. You play just the C and E strings together, using the thumb to pluck the C string and the index of the right hand playing the E string. After one beat your ring finger comes down to the 4th fret of the C string, and you just groove putting the ring finger down and taking it off, that’s what the tabs are showing. One G shuffle subs for one G strum pattern.

Time to grind! Cheers Tyler.
