Okay, the Island Strum, Calypso strum, what I call "Old Faithful" the classic DOWN DOWN UP UP DOWN UP. We use it ALL the time. From Hawaiian music, to pop, rock, blues, whatever, it really is a one size fits all. So, sometimes it feels like we fall into this trap where it is the only strum pattern that we use, and you know what, that is okay, it is used all the time because it works in all different types of contexts. So, instead of abandoning it what we are going to do is learn to give it slight modifications, making it more dynamic, interesting and fun. The best part is, it is really easy! If you give me 13 minutes of your time I promise I will make your strumming more dynamic, and fun!
This is a rhythm tutorial that was created for beginner ukulele players, but intermediate, pre-intermediate, advanced players, players of all levels will benefit from learning how to go beyond a strum pattern. When you lock yourself into a pattern you are stuck with it for the entire song, but when you learn how to think about it as counting music you can take it to the next level.
