When you first start of playing ukulele you are a strummer. What does this mean? It means you can learn a couple of songs, strum some chords and sing the lyrics, but that that point you are just recreating what has been done without understanding why. Later in you career, to go from a strummer to a full blown musician, you need to tackle music theory. There are a lot of elements of music theory but one of the most important is phrasing. A phrase is a music sentence and it becomes a point of emphasis much earlier in other musical disciplines like singing, playing a woodwind or playing a brass, because these instruments require that you breathe to produce sound. The piano, guitar, ukulele, we don't have to breath to play these instruments so we don't really notice what a phrase is, but you need to if you want to grow.
A phrase is a melodic sentence and is marked by when a singer takes a breath. By understanding phrasing you can compose better melodies, sing better because you know how to practice better, learn about resolution, transpose ideas easier, play better chord melody, and analyze music on a much deeper level to understand why you like the music that you like so much.
