Syncopation, the emphasis of the off beat, the backbone of all reggae music, and really really hard to play with chord melody ukulele but we are going to tackle it head on today in our video. If you find this video to be really really hard for you and you want to enter the challenge, just do your best, I am not going judge you how well you played, but rather how much effort you put into playing the piece.
There are a couple important tricks to making this work. One is when you don't have any melody you should be strumming down on with your index finger and you should do it every off beat. That keeps the bounce going for the style. The other is you shouldn't harmonize melody that is played on the quarter notes or the 16th notes, you only want to harmonize the notes that are played on the 8th notes, the ands, that keeps the syncopated bounce going for the harmonized parts as well.
Truth be told today is going to be far and away the hardest piece of this entire challenge, and it really isn't even close. I want you to know that if you made it this far I am really proud of you. I know that a lot of you are way out of your comfort zone, border line panic zone, and doing playing this style of music is completely new to you. Grab job taking the plunge, great job from the thumb strum, to learning how to harmonize the melody, using the root notes, refining your practice, moving the chords up the fretboard, adding 16th note and finally syncopation. You have created a very strong foundation for you moving forward that will make it so you can continue to improve, get better, and play all of the chord melodies on our site, as well as take a melody and arrange your own. The next step is how to read sheet music, get started here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ve4BK9wBhbA
