Open Mics - Who, what, where, when, why?

I want to know about your open mic situation! 

Who - What kind of musicians play the open mics around you? Guitarist? Banjo? Electric Sitar? Amateur? Pros? 

Where - This is one is the most important. Where, what city and what place, usually a bar, but sometimes a library, farmers market, etc, hosts your open mic? I would like to have an open mic map for my next big van trip in USA (which is now looking more like 2022, but should be annual after that) If I can't get paid gigs I will do the open mic thing. 

What - What kind of music do they play? 

When - When? haha, that one is pretty straight forward?

Why - Why do you play open mics? You like them? Goals to get better? To meet other musicians? Overcome a fear?

Minneapolis has a uke 'club' -- several weekly jams, plus a weekend festival in the fall. They sometimes sponsor master classes, both ticketed and sometimes it's just pass-the-jar. They've also help coordinate group lessons and hire an instructor. All suspended from the time being.

A ton of great information on this thread! I am going to either have to come back to it or ask again once life requires a little less social distancing.
