Alright, time to take this one to the south of the Dixie line for one of my favorite jams from a great band, The Band. Easy strum pattern, open chords, if you are beginner you should still get this one pretty quick but to keep all you learners challenged I also included some piano licks to help you go from the Chorus to the Verse to add a little hot sauce and keep the more advanced players challenged, as well.

Will Improve

  • Borrowing chords from other keys
  • Changing meter in the song (4/4 to 6/4 to 4/4)
  • Playing piano riffs on the ukulele
  • Songs with multiple strum patterns

Although the majority of the band comes from Canada, they really captured the heart of soul of southern rock, largely do to Levon's southern roots. This particular song is about poor white southerner that was defeated in the civil war and their quality of life afterwards. A really dynamic song, with powerful lyrics, showing that war has losers on both sides, and not everyone involved on the other side is a demon, it really humanizes war in a lovely poetic way. This song sounds great on Ukulele, and it sounds great when you play it with other instruments. Call a friend that plays piano after you learn how to play this song on Ukulele because of the Ukulele tutorial and you can jam it together. Plus A minor pentatonic over the verse and C major pentatonic over the chorus will sound absolutely fantastic, and they have the same notes!
