Although the majority of the band comes from Canada, they really captured the heart of soul of southern rock, largely do to Levon's southern roots. This particular song is about poor white southerner that was defeated in the civil war and their quality of life afterwards. A really dynamic song, with powerful lyrics, showing that war has losers on both sides, and not everyone involved on the other side is a demon, it really humanizes war in a lovely poetic way.
