Today we are going to learn how to play "A Boy Named Sue" written by Shel Silverstein and made famous by the man in black, Johnny Cash. Cash recorded the song live in concert at California's San Quentin State Prison for his At San Quentin album. According to wikipedia The version that he played live San Quentin version of the song became Cash's biggest hit billboard hit, I found this a little surprising because of Hurt and its mega popularity when Johnny did his series of albums with Rick Rubin. According to Johnny Cash's autobiography he had just received the song and upon recording it was reading lyrics off a paper and was very surprised but its commercial success.
This song is played in Bb, with a capo on the first fret with the chords in the key of A, so we taught the song in the key of A, but also showed the chords for the key of G and C as well. G is if you have a very deep voice and can go a little lower and C for the female or male tenor voice, both key swill have much easier chord voicings because the key of A has the E chord.
The chords for the key of A are A - D - E
to transpose to the key of G play G - C - D
to transpose to the key of C play C - F - G
