Missing the #10DayBluesChallenge? Want to test your blues skills? Interested in adding a jazzy dominate 13th chord to your vocabulary? We can do all that with just with one lesson. Today we are going to break down a Freddie King inspired blues in the key of C with the very cool 13th chord. The 13th chord is a 7 chord, like C7 with the 6th interval, creating the C13 chord. It is bluesy, it is jazzy, it can be dressed up or worn down, it is basically the mullet of chords, business in the front party in the back. We are also going to add some really cool triplets, riffs, fills, chromatic moving chords and an epic turnaround with a drone note. Really good stuff that is a lot of fun to play! Let's break it down, tabs on the screen, print them out on Patreon and follow along!

Thanks Nate, you'll get it, just take it slow. Feel free to mix it up with any turnaround in C as well.

People are talking about changing the last four bars. I have some experience in this. I find that once you start jazzy with some 13 chords, you need to end jazzy or it just doesn't sound right. Here's a few turnarounds that I've found or created that work--at least in some contexts (I'll use the actual chord names instead of the roman numerals to make it easier): #1, F13, E13, D13, G7b5 sliding into Gmaj7. #2, G7, G7sus4 + A7, Dm7, G7. #3, C13, A13, D13, G9. I know this sounds difficult, but it is only a matter of using barre chords which simplifies matters greatly...once you know them.
