On October 14th, 2013, 5.5 years ago, a Tyler that didn't know what Tenthumbs would become did a tutorial on Simple Man, a basic three chord strummer version (check the link out here, made on my coach in Buenos Aires! The first year I ever lived there, pretty cool) but there is so much more more to this basic song that just three chord. The walking bass lines and doubling up with another instrument makes this song sound much closer to the original recording, so that is what we are doing here today! I hope you dig it.

Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Ukulele Tutorial with Tabs

New Ukulele Tutorials every Wednesday and Saturday, subscribe and learn! Today we are going to learn how to play "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd on the Ukulele. I did a really simple tutorial on this song a long time ago just to get you strumming through it but today I wanted to try and capture more of what they are doing on the guitar for our Ukulele so you could have a little more fun and spice it up a little more. There are some really cool walking bass line ideas that I wanted to incorporate but we will also look at how you can add a second Ukulele to really get it rocking. Southern rock music is some of the most fun to play on the ukulele in my opinion and this is no exceptions. When I think southern rock and roll, I think of Lynyrd Skynyrd. That is funny because they are from Jacksonville, Florida, and they were the ones that taught me Florida is still the south! At least north of Orlando, hahahaha. The simple chord progression is a staple of classic rock style music from the 70s, and how great bands took the simple chord progressions and made them beautiful. "Simple Man" is written in the key of A minor/C major, though all guitars were tuned down a half step, effectively making it G# minor/B. The song begins with an acoustic arpeggiated chord sequence made up of the chords C major, G major and A minor (though with the tuned-down guitars, effective progression of B major, F# major and G# minor). This intro is accompanied by a bass line and cymbals before the drums and vocals come in for the verse. Lyrically the song is about a mother talking to her child about life, inspired by the passing of Ronnie Van Zant's grandmother. The chorus of the song includes electric guitars imitating sections of the arpeggiated intro progression. The guitar solo is performed by Gary Rossington. Thanks Gary!

Tyler, I was wondering did you ever have a tutorial on SleepWalk? It seems like a tune perfect for the uke. Just wondering. Love your Blues jam tunes.
