Welcome to the first video in our four part series on how to write songs, we are starting with the building blocks of harmony, the notes that support your lyrics and melody, we are rocking with the chord progressions. Today we are looking at chord progressions, how to identify them with roman numerals and how to create your own chord progressions in addition to talking about the 7th extensions, and non-diatonic chords. The idea is over the next four weeks we are going to learn how to write our own songs, piece by piece, so it is something that you can replicate over the next month and than at the end of the month we are going to have song writing contest with the winner getting an ukulele! Well, I immediately went to one of my favorite songs in order to transpose to an easier set of chords. I'm talking 'Big Sky Country' by Chris Whitley. It starts with an easy F but then there is a D#, a G#, and a Bb. Yikes. My fingers end up in knots. I can't seem to figure out how to transpose this since I don't see where any of it fits into a chord chart. I know it's there. I'm just not seeing it.
