I think that you are supposed to feel both fascinated and uncomfortable. Mission accomplished for Neil Gaiman! Also did you spot who the voice actor is for Mervyn Pumpkinhead?

A couple odd side effects from moving up the show’s setting to its own present day here. First, it’s much harder to believe Unity is still alive at 117, an age not ENTIRELY unprecedented but you’d think it would get at least one mention of how remarkable it is, especially since Gaiman put enough thought in to add an extra generation between her and Rose. The other is that the serial killer convention is a long-running thing rather than just a brand new thing, apparently because Gaiman figured the Corinthian’s corruption of society would still progress on the same schedule and he influenced the first convention at the same time.

Given, as you say, it’s not ENTIRELY unprecedented someone could live to 117, and we are in a fantasy world, I didn’t bat much of an eye. Still weird though, I agree, that there’s not even a quick lampshade of the fact that it is quite remarkable, though, as you said, Gaiman does update the generations accordingly. As someone who doesn’t yet know how the serial killer what have you plays out, this presentation of it’s been a long-running thing does work for today’s day and age, considering what a, for want of a better word, popular market serial killer/true crime fiction and/or nonfiction is. You know, it kind of works as a warped satire/criticism of such a craze.
