If I wasn't invested in the Amelia story before, it REALLY didn't help that the new twist is the army apparently just randomly declared her husband dead for shits and giggles. The best I'll give the writers on this one is they may have come up with an actual explanation for why they thought he was dead which was cut from the show, but even with that, you don't get credit for things you don't put onscreen.

Cas believes God brought him back twice and put the brothers on the plane at the start of S5. So maybe God resurrected Don.

Most certainly a fun and heartfelt episode. Sucks for Sam in the Amelia plotline with her dad, and as soon as the dad starts warming up to him, he finds out he’s in a Casablanca type situation. And his name is Sam. Ironic. I assume Amelia got the dog. The main plot was a looney one. Halfway through it, the title clicked, and I laughed. Then when the scene explaining the title happened, I laughed harder. Castiel cracked me up with his Columbo impression, his grilling the cat, and then there was his analysis of Wile E. Coyote, which I heard it, and said, “That’s... an astonishingly spot-on analysis. Well done, Cas.” It’s hilarious how the credits made me impatient once I saw Mike Farrell’s name, I flipped out, and yelled, “Oh, hey. Mike Farr...Wait! WHAT!?” Few seconds later, I had to pause, and yell. “Wait! Just wait a fucking minute! Hold the goddamn phone! You mean to say one of the starring actors of my favorite tv show past present and future has a guest spot on Supernatural!?!? ...HOW in pluperfect hell was I completely unaware of this!?” Thus, in addition to knowing whoever Mike was playing had to be involved in the looney plot, I also wondered if any of the other surviving cast members of M*A*S*H appear on this show. One thought, which I’m sure won’t come to pass was, “...David Ogden Stiers doesn’t pop up as a long-lost Winchester relative somewhere down the line, does he? That’d be pretty fucking hilarious.” Mike was great as Fred. Made you cry his scene where Sam gets through to him about the living in the dream world. And you summed it up well about how Sam was kind of doing that himself, and the parallels were interesting. I loved how you clocked how the doctor was likely the culprit. When it revealed he was planning to kill Fred, I got protective yelling, “You harm ONE hair on B. J.’s head and I will personally crush you into a fine powder and sprinkle you on my morning oatmeal!” It was striking seeing Fred take the doctor out; your reaction to that was shared by me. My own comment was, “Goddamn, Beej.” It was heartwarming that Cas stayed with Fred to help, and I would certainly hope that Cas puts in a call to Sidney Freedman to help as well. That final shot got me some. All in all, like you said, a fun episode. And it yielded a most fun and enjoyable reaction, Jess. Thanks.

Ever seen Desperate Housewives? Farrell appears on that show as the father of John Slattery, which got a lot of mockery that they look more like brothers...except their age difference actually is just barely enough to make this plausible, and Farrell just happens to have aged extremely well.

I have seen snippets of Desperate Housewives. I was unaware that either John Slattery or Mike Farrell was on it. Now I’m wrapping my head around the image of B. J. Hunnicutt being the dad of Roger Sterling. Yeah, the age difference, though maybe a stretch, is plausible. I’ve seen recent pictures of Mike and he’s looking good for being in his mid-eighties.

Sounds about right! Honestly, I didn't even thought about it! You blew my mind... ^^
