I had my suspicions about Trayvis from the start, so this really made me feel smart. But honestly, who cares about that because LANDO'S HERE! And yes, that really is Billy Dee Williams himself, showing just how true it was when upon being announced as appearing in Rise of Skywalker, he simply said "Lando never left." This was also the same time that he made a cameo as Lando in The Lego Movie, and helped with some fans' patience in his taking so long to show up in the sequel trilogy. He was actually going to be the Canto Bight contact in Last Jedi, but then they figured bringing him back just to completely fail in his attempt to help the heroes would be an insult to the character, so he was replaced with Benicio del Toro, which you can kind of tell with how Maz's dialogue is so clearly written to not reveal the contact's name.

Yeah, I had a similar thing of sitting down to watch these episodes, saying, “Oh, shit, we’re almost done with the first season. I mean, I know it’s on the shorter side, even so.” I’m with you too, Jess, on when you’re having such a fantastic time with something how it just flies by. These are great episodes. It's excellent to see Lando Calrissian. Billy Dee Williams providing the voice is lovely. Sure, it’s not unlike James Earl Jones as Darth Vader where he sounds a little old for the character at this point in the timeline. It's so awesome hearing Billy Dee. Who cares? He caused some shenanigans in this episode. If I were Lando I'd have tried to sweeten the pot, smooth things over more by offering that once it was all over, they could kick back and enjoy a cold case of Colt .45, it works every time. As you say, we do not bet members of the family. Yes, it is a highlight how over it, Hera was. I mentioned previously that my cousin on my mom’s side who’s basically my sister in all but name, her favorite Star Wars character is Hera. Two moments that she particularly loves of Hera are in this episode where she uses the tray to get the drop on Azmorigan, and afterwards how she makes it known to Lando she didn’t care for the chicanery, and how she emphasized the point REAL GOOD to the point Lando is a temporary soprano. It is so lovely, Jess, to hear you say that Hera is the frontrunner for your favorite character in the group. Two small sidenotes, though Azmorigan is disgusting, I love that James Hong is the voice. Second, Lando flirting with Chopper just proves that Billy Dee is physically incapable of turning off the charm and charisma. The second episode, first, I agree that it is nice seeing Ezra train in a safer environment. You are correct in that observation. It is a highlight of Ezra realizing the scope of what his parents did. It's rotten he falls victim to misinterpreting the visions. Of course, as Kanan observes, visions are tricky even at the best of times. It is as my favorite character from the tv series of Fargo said, “Are you familiar with the Russian saying, “The past is unpredictable?” Which of us can say with certainty what has occurred, actually occurred, and what is simply rumor, misinformation, opinion? Photographs can be doctored. One's eyes can be deceived. We see what we believe, not the other way around.” And yes, it is lovely, Hera being compassionate with Ezra. It sucks seeing Trayvis turn out to be a stoolie. Worse still it’s Brent Spiner, our dear friend, Data. Boy, you think you know a guy. It's great how the episode drops the hints that something’s fishy about him, and I loved you caught on. I also had a moment realizing it’s the third time that the group had fallen into a trap because of Trayvis. It's as Ian Flemming said, “Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action.” Again, hard to believe we are almost to the end of the first season. Sharing this show with you is becoming a truly lovely and exceptional experience, Jess. Thank you for the reaction, and I cannot wait for what’s to come.

Lando failing in the mission in The Last Jedi, I wouldn’t have minded as it would fit the overall theme of the film of failure and how one overcomes it. Him seeling out Finn and Rose, that I would have taken exception to as I would find it difficult to accept Lando selling out the heroes again after Empire. In any case, we got Benicio’s character whom I really liked. I’d love to see him again in some capacity.

Ryan

I’m pretty sure the selling out was added after Lando was replaced and Rian Johnson could do whatever he wanted with a brand new character.

Ryan

Well, Spiner is also Lore, after all. Speaking of, how great was it seeing him seamlessly switch between the characters in a single take on Picard? And it’s amazing to see James Hong at long last get a sizable amount of mainstream attention for Everything Everywhere All At Once, including his spectacular flex at the SAG Awards, “My first movie was with Clark Gable.”

Thomas Corp

That’s true about Lore. Yeah, the man has the range. And yes, it is lovely to see James Hong get wider mainstream attention. I've been a fan for a long time, I always loved it whenever he appeared in anything. To see him gain newer fans on the scale that he has has been wonderful. That moment at the SAG awards was terrific.

Thomas Corp

You might be right about the selling out being exclusive to Benicio’s character.

Ah the start of Chopper's contempt for Zeb! He NEVER forgives him for betting him away like that!! And Kanan should know better too, he'll be sleeping in the cargo hold tonight as he'll be getting the cold shoulder from Hera! :D Haha, Ezra was fine with Lando until he started doing his thing on Sabine, and then he doesn't like him! Note her Phoenix logo (and its colouring) is reminiscent of the later Rebel Alliance logo. Love Azmorigan's design, he's taken from the concept art for Jabba The Hutt and his love of food is an echo to the gorging old Jabba does. Played too by the great James Hong, so two legends showing up in this episode with Billy Dee Williams reprising Lando of course too. Who needs a lightsabre, when you have a good tray!! Then we have the puffer pig shenangins, oh my! I love how Lando riles up Ezra and Kanan, two supposed Jedi, that they may be tempted to go to the dark side in their annoyance at him!! Hera giving Lando a talking down as well, she is the best! Chopper playing Lando is great, especially as he says "whatever...." when they part; though of course Lando knows it, and Ezra still trying too hard with Sabine, thats not the way young padawan! Such a gloriously ridiculous episode, but what do you expect when Lando is involved! :D Onto episode 12 and I love how much glee at the start Zeb has in trying to shoot at Ezra as he is learning his blocking. Its great that as he is having the vision, he is actually able to hit the target with every shot, showing that the force is increasingly flowing through him as he is developing his abilities. Speaking of Jedi training, if you remember the Practice Makes Perfect episode of Tales Of The Jedi that you reference, where we open with Ahsoka traing on the droids in the Temple, with everyone watching; there is a young Jedi kid there with his master watching on - that was Kanan!! I wonder why the show designers, used the great David Niven's face for Travis, he never had anything to do with Star Wars. Played by a Star Trek legend in Brent Spiner too; I like it when there is Star Wars/Trek crossover. Chopper shanking that droid then throwing it down the pipe, he's starting, folks!! He then almost decapitates Kanan, I suppose he's still annoyed with Kanan going along with Zeb about betting him in that ruddy card game! And yes Jess, don't worry, you'll see plenty of Chopper violence against stormtroopers soon hehe! ;) More Hera showing her greatness and dedication to the rebel cause. All the character's names on this show are picked for a meaning. Hera for example, is taken from the name of Zeus's wife from Greek Mythology, and is the god of womanhood, childbirth and family - perfect for the character. Oh you are right Jess that Ezra's look says this isn't over. Its only beginning. This is bad news for our crew though, Travis and Kallus are narrowing down who the rebels are, and they have names to match the faces for the most part. They will now step up their hunt to rid Lothal of these 'insurgents'. Yep three eps to go for the first season, and its a three-parter at that. Things start ramping up for our crew and the show!

Saltire

Is season 3 of Picard worth watching? Have heard more solid things about it after the supposed shitshow of the first two seasons, and I know the TNG crew are all back, and I loved TNG back in the day (though it was always second place to Babylon 5 for me back then! :D ).

Thomas Corp

I love how Zeb deflects some of the blame by not unreasonably pointing out that Kanan gave him the go ahead on betting Chopper. Yeah, Kanan’s going to have a fun month sleeping in the cargo hold after that episode. There is a difference between a Jedi having a good lid on their emotions and being understandably annoyed by shenanigans. Even Obi-Wan got annoyed by Hondo at times. It's why I like to think even the Jedi have a hit the pillow policy, but only on special occasions. I do love how Hera says they’re not giving Lando up, and Kanan chimes in with, “Well, hold on a minute with that last one.” As to why David Niven for the look of Trayvis... For the same reason we got Truman Capote the Hutt? I don’t know. We also got Cad Bane based off of Lee Van Cleef as Angel Eyes, though that one works very well. Yeah, plenty of droid violence to come. Already, as you say, him shanking the droid and throwing it down the pipe, and nearly decapitating Kanan, kids love it.

Ryan

This isn’t even the first time this has happened to David Niven. The Green Lantern villain Sinestro was modeled after him for no real reason.

Thomas Corp

True. He does have a very distinctive face. Maybe people think it's a useful template and/or people just happen to be big fans of his and wish to pay tribute, so to speak. Or maybe some combination of the two. I mean, he is great, and A Matter of Life and Death is in my top twenty favorite films, so I'm not necessarily complaining.

Saltire

Ok lads, will get onto it later this week. Been thinking about rewatching the old TNG stuff as well anyway, so will check it out.

I forgot to mention that Kanan spreads his arms while looking at Lando after Hera hits him, as if to say 'who, me?', and just has to be a direct nod to Han Solo meeting up with Lando on the Bespin landing pad in Empire Strikes Back! That is very true that some characters looks and mannerisms in Star Wars, are based on other people and characters, like Truman Capote or Lee Van Cleef as noted; its just such a weird choice of visual, however I think when he was first introduced perhaps the showrunners wanted him to look a bit dashing and try to sell him as a good guy, even after they fall into the trap set by him of trying to free Master Luminara. His character model also looks nothing like David Niven, so perhaps thats the pic he chooses for himself to sell him off as a charismatic senator; like people photoshopping and tinting up their appearances online these days. A Matter Of Life And Death is a classic for sure, I love the scope of that film. He is also in a hilarious film called Murder By Death (even that name cracks me up!) in which a group of famous detectives gather for dinner and have to solve the murder of their host - played incidentally by Truman Capote! AND Alec Guinness is in it too as a blind butler! :D

Thomas Corp

Good catch with the Empire reference. There’s also the musical motif first introduced in that scene accompanying Lando’s appearance here on Rebels. It's a good thought you have on the look for Trayvis. Like you say, Star Wars does have a reputation of borrowing looks and mannerisms for it’s characters. I’ve heard the speculation that the Emperor’s look drew inspiration from the Evil Queen in her Old Hag disguise, and I've read that Roger Ebert speculated about it with the Emperor saying he looked like his look was inspired by Death from The Seventh Seal. He also said that Admiral Ackbar “looks like the missing link between Tyrannosaurus Rex and Charles De Gaulle.” Murder By Death is a hilarious film. An absolutely killer (Pun intended) cast. Cracks me up every time I see it.

Ryan

Also The Guns of Navarone, where he gets to use his real experience fighting in World War II, and gets a classic detective summation scene.

Saltire

Yeah Niven was an iteresting fella. I'd always see him on tv back in the 80's doing the talk show rounds, as he (and Jimmy Stewart) were always great guests at telling stories of stuff that happened during Hollywood's Golden Age. On his war, he was once asked why he'd never speak about his experiences throughout the war, when he was always speaking about other things that happened around that time; and he answered once : 'I will, however, tell you just one thing about the war, my first story and my last. I was asked by some American friends to search out the grave of their son near Bastogne. I found it where they told me I would, but it was among 27,000 others, and I told myself that here, Niven, were 27,000 reasons why you should keep your mouth shut after the war.' Thats class. He also lived with that scoundrel Errol Flynn for a while in a house dubbed 'Cirrhosis-by-the-Sea'. :D
