Unfortunately, these two movies have become overshadowed by how Uma Thurman was forced into doing a car stunt that permanently damaged her knees, which meant she wasn't able to capitalize on any other action hero roles she might have been able to build off it (though she was able to do some quite impressive dancing under the circumstances in her very next film, The Producers). And it's a real shame because this is perhaps the absolute purest expression of Tarantino as a filmmaker, with Roger Ebert famously describing it as being like watching a virtuoso violinist playing Flight of the Bumblebee, having a positively Kubrickian level of control over the camera so that every single second plays out to his exact desires. Thurman never worked with him again, though she did publicly forgive him once the incident became known.

You don't actually see anything involving the Bride's baby (which of course you now know is because of the twist that she was successfully delivered during the coma), but Uma's performance in the scene where she wakes up and discovers she's no longer pregnant is absolutely enough that I was getting very worried when you started talking about how it could trigger you, and was relieved to see you skipped it. Not to mention the...other stuff going on in that scene.

Yeah, the Kill Bill films are my favorite Tarantino films. You talk about how big it was when it came out, and I remember well this film and it’s follow-up being advertised like crazy when they came out twenty years ago. I didn’t see them first run as I was in seventh grade at the time. I first caught them five years after the original release, around the same time as I did Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. The Bride is definitely Uma Thurman’s best character. Yes, very much a female dominant film, and it’s great in that regard; I love that you really appreciated that aspect of the film. This makes it more unfortunate as you noted, and I see that Ryan noted as well, the whole business with Weinstein has left a sour taste in one’s mouth and marred the legacy of these films some. Setting that aside, these films are stupendous. Great performances by Vivica A. Fox as Vernita and especially Lucy Liu as O-Ren Ishii. Also, as you noted, Chiaki Kuriyama is great as Gogo. Violent is putting it mildly what with all the blood fountains. Yeah, a fantastic soundtrack. I love how in the first film, David Carradine remains largely in the shadows as Bill, leaving an air of mystery, likewise, Michael Madsen is only teased as Budd. Other standout performances are Sonny Chiba as Hattori Hanzō, and the appearance of Michael Parks as Sheriff Earl McGraw, and it’s great to see his son, James playing the character’s son, Edgar, “Son number one” as Earl says. I love the cliffhanger the film leaves you on. Just how Bill drops the big bombshell, and how it ends with Julie Dreyfus conveying Sofie’s moment of realization. Your own reaction to it was great. Concerning the scenes, you had to skip. Since you mentioned about it in the monthly chat, I was wondering how it was going to go in the reaction. No apologies are necessary, Jess. Those scenes are difficult to watch. I don’t blame you in the slightest for having to skip. As you say, it is an unfortunate downside that you miss the majority of Daryl Hannah as Elle in this film, but your health and wellness are more important. You mention how you have no doubt that Uma sold the hell out of the scenes, you would be correct as she lets out such a striking scream of pain and anguish that cuts deep into one’s heart and soul. I don’t know if this helps, but the latter portion of the scenes you skipped, specifically the rape aspects of it, my brother and I both are physically repulsed whenever we see those scenes. In fact, watching this movie this time to prepare for your reaction, it got me significantly worse than it has in viewings past. Everything you had to say about it was very eloquently well-spoken, Jess. I know you’ve often stated that you worry about have you phrased things properly and/or in an understandable way. And with my Asperger’s I get exactly where you’re coming from on that. No need to worry about that in this instance because, as I said, you conveyed everything perfectly. As to scenes that will bother and/or trigger you in Volume Two, we’re past the worst of it in terms of the scenes that triggered you here. There WILL be scenes in Volume Two that are going to bother you. I can’t comment more in detail than that. One such sequence gives you advance warning, another scene does not. That's all I can say for now. This was a great reaction, even with the parts that were missing, thanks, Jess.

I'm enough of a troll that there's a bunch of classic movies I'd like to see released in theaters just for the horrific awkwardness that would spread through the whole room when Weinstein's name appears in the credits.

there is absolutely no need to apologize Jess. your health and wellness come first above all else. I enjoyed your reaction regardless and I'm so looking forward to your reaction to Vol. 2, as it's my favorite of the two films. fun fact: the movie was written as one film but it was too long to be released as one, so Tarantino had to chop it into two and release it as two separate volumes. as such, my favorite way to watch is to have a double-feature and watch both vol. 2 and vol. 2 back to back. ❤️

I have to say it was quite a hassle to find a way to watch the full reaction in Germany because there’s no streaming service that offers “Kill Bill” 🥲😂😂

Unless I'm missing something, it's the same in the states. As far as I've been able to tell, Kill Bill isn't available through streaming.
