The last story got away okay with having the Doctor on his own since he was back home on Gallifrey, but here you can really feel them struggling with how to handle the character without anyone to talk to, and leaning VERY heavily on Tom Baker's natural comedy talents to sell him doing some random schtick directly to the camera. So it's no surprise that we quickly get introduced to Leela as the obvious new companion, now that the viewers had this time to process the loss of Sarah Jane.
