The first time I played the game, I didn't know that Sarah wouldn't make it, and when she got shot, it absolutely floored me, and I had to stop playing for the night. Never did a game do that to me before, and I had been playing games for 30 years plus by then. It was one instance of several events in the game, which made it so compelling, aside from the great gameplay. I think they nailed this as a premiere though and fleshing out more of the story from the off. Though I like Pedro Pascal, I thought someone like Josh Brolin would work better, as he is also a capable actor and looks much more like the Joel from the game. However, Pedro never lets us down, whatever he's in; he's become a go-to guy for so many projects these days, and no wonder why. Very good start so far. I've seen the first two eps as of writing this, but they are nailing the world and the desolation of it well it seems. Would anyone want to live in a world like this, if Ellie's resilience to the infection wasn't there?

Though as I said, I suspected that Sarah would die, it is still an effective enough scene that the shock value is retained. Never have played the game, thus I can’t speak to experience there. I think the only time a game floored me to the point I had to stop for a while to process if nothing else was when I played Knights of the Old Republic for the first time. I don’t wish to specify for fear of spoiling it for Jess should it ever make a transition to anything she’d react to, though I would imagine you know what I'm talking about. In terms of the casting for Joel, I always kept hearing Hugh Jackman get brought up. Having now become familiar with the story, and having seen Hugh in Logan and especially Prisoners, I can see why Hugh was a popular choice, and if I had played the game, he would probably have been my first choice. That said, Pedro Pascal was an excellent pick for Joel; I love the energy he brought to this. Yeah, a solid premiere, this was.

I don't know if this is the case for anyone else, but both of the links on the site are for the first part of the reaction. There doesn't seem to be anyway to get part 2.

Sorry I should have been more specific. It will play, but I was talking about the download link, I always download the reactions.

So far, the show is about perfect in what it chooses to take straight from the game, versus doing its own thing. Most notably, the episode significantly expands on the time before the breakout, as the game simply starts at Sarah giving Joel the watch (with the dialogue kept word for word, which was pretty neat). And Joel and Tess' attack on Robert's place was used as the game's tutorial, which is of course significantly stripped down here, and I imagine quite a few players were saying "Oh come on, it's cheating that they don't have to keep hiding behind cars!"

I don´t know why I can´t sync the full reactions of HBO shows with the episode... I had this with House of The Dragons too ^^ Disney and Netflix works ffine, Prime Video depends on the show (I have to sync a Supernatural episode about three times), but HBO (well, it´s on Sky for me) it doesn´t sync at all, as if it´s a bit faster on my end ^^ xD I´m wondering if they showed the ingame-scence of Sarahs death as a reference how to act it out - it was sooo fucking good!!! Oh, and I loved it that you went in blind! Seeing your reaction to Sarahs death was pretty cool, since I knew how that "prologue" ends....

Most HBO shows work for me, but His Dark Materials was always slow.

Great reaction. Just wanted to say that I've never played the game either (for similar reasons, my gaming stretches to solitaire and that's about it!) and I enjoyed your reaction because you were genuinely surprised and reacting to what you saw. I've watched a few other reactions and the ones where they knew the game weren't as good. No-one spoiled anything but they also knew what was coming and so their reactions felt more muted. Like they knew what was coming and were trying not to say certain things or something. I'm not criticising anyone, they were honest and as I said they didn't spoil but at the end of the day I liked yours more. There was another channel whose reactors also didn't know the game, and that was my second favourite after yours. That's just me, other opinions are valid.

I also have not played the game. I know of it, I've heard people talk about it, but I've never played it. Couldn’t tell you what console it was on, besides which, console-wise I never advanced past the original Xbox, Gamecube, and Gameboy Advance myself. Also, to address your saying that you’re not the best at video games, that can be me as well. Video games were often a gamble in how good or how bad I would be at them. I haven’t played a video game in years now, so I'm probably rusty. Yes, a highlight of this first episode is the human aspect of exploring the beginning of the outbreak, specifically showcasing Joel and Sarah’s relationship. Pedro Pascal is proving fantastic as Joel. Nico Parker was great as Sarah. I didn’t know for sure that Sarah would die. However, given the general knowledge I had of the game, combined with nobody who played the game that I had talked to in years past had ever said anything about Joel having a daughter, at least not in the main body of the narrative, I had suspected she would die. When and in what context was a question mark, thus the scene was still an effective shock. Your reaction to that was a standout moment of the reaction. I don’t blame you in the slightest for needing to pause and collect yourself. The second half was great in exploring the state of the world twenty years following the outbreak. So far, I'm liking Bella Ramsey as Ellie. I too was curious what made Ellie so special and surmised that her being infected and is fine was likely the reason. You're probably accurate that what happened to Sarah is likely not something Joel has gotten over, nor will he ever get over, and as you observe, what one does is learn how to cope with that. There's a quote that I've come across, I’m not sure what it’s from or who said it, but you discuss that about coping with trauma and guilt, and it recalled the quote, the quote being, “Time heals all wounds. And if it doesn't, you name them something other than wounds and agree to let them stay.” I would imagine this is a show you’ll very much enjoy, Jess. I look forward to what’s to come.

It's funny that you say you have excellent Crash Bandicoot skills... cause yep the developers of the game also made Crash Bandicoot 1-3 (and Crash Team Racing) too as for this game The Last of Us Part I which is a PS5 remake of this game came out late last year and is coming to PC in March so you don't have to shell out for a system for it now if you ever feel like reigniting that itch to play

i strongly recommend giving the game and subsequent dlc's and sequel a go once you've watched this! part 1 was recently remade for the ps5 as someone has stated above me, and is coming out on pc (i believe digitally on steam, but will likely be available elsewhere for pc) at some point in the next few months so in theory it should be easy to play without having to buy a new console! it's worth every penny if you do end up wanting to play it - i think it's a fairly easy game to play if you're not much of a gamer, like i am - i love video games but i don't have much patience to play them myself, aha, so i mainly stick with watching other people play games - but tlou is one of the few games i own and have wanted to sit through and play myself even knowing what happens in it, i just don't have a steady access to the ps4 to play it unfortunately :(
