I did notice that last week how you got what you wanted in that you had the two episodes in a row without having to, as you described uncomfortably talk about sexism, racism, and/or any other isms of an unpleasant nature. And I was happy that you were appreciative of that; that you got what you were wanting. Now onto this episode. Yeah, this episode is quite a memorable one. It tends to get disparaged at times due to the presentation of it. I concede that it is very over the top, and to your one point, the humiliation scene did drag a hair. Even so, the whole concept is horrifying. I knew that you and I both would love the moment where Bones protests that they couldn’t force Spock to have emotions. And like you say, it is significant given how often Bones expresses annoyance over Spock’s logical habits. The best part of the episode, I agree, is Michael Dunn as Alexander. I’ve always loved Michael for his turn as the villainous Dr. Miguelito Loveless in Wild Wild West, and it’s great to see him be such a delightful character here as Alexander. May I simply say, Jess, that I loved how much you invested in Alexander. And yes, there was a great deal of care and empathy with the writing of his character. In terms of Alexander not taking revenge and taking power for himself, I know who you’re talking about in the character comparison you were making. Two moments that got to me on a personal level were first, Spock’s, as you described it, insanely insightful line “I have noted that the healthy release of emotion is frequently very unhealthy for those closest to you.” I heard that, it hit way too close to home, and I said, “Ain’t that the goddamn truth.” The discovery of why Alexander was devoid of the power was the second scene that got me a little. More specifically, how they mention it’s the result of the pituitary gland not producing sufficient growth hormones, which, like Spock’s insightful line, also hit a touch close to home. Related to that, you mentioned how you always know when it comes to needles even though you are told, “You won't even know it happened.” Speaking from experience, I concur. You know a situation’s bad when killer fashion and makeup looks though they are, the situation and how bad it is makes it so you can’t appreciate it. You are correct that the scenes of Spock and Kirk being forced to kiss Nurse Chapel and Uhura are deeply uncomfortable for everyone involved. The Kirk and Uhura kiss, though hard to comprehend now, was an historic and groundbreaking moment in television history as it is one of the first interracial kisses on television and is the episode’s most enduring legacy. The executives were fairly insistent on it not being in the episode. The way Nichelle Nichols described it, she and Shatner were in total agreement that the scene needed to happen. Made more notable in that by all accounts, this was the only time Nichelle and Shatner EVER agreed on anything. As I say, you are correct that the scene itself is deeply uncomfortable. From a historical point of view, however, it was a monumental moment in television history. Even with that in mind, I don’t blame you in the slightest for being uncomfortable during that scene, as that’s me as well with that scene. I’m with you on not being the biggest fan of how the episode ended. And I too would probably need a most compelling argument to convince me not to take poetic revenge against the Platonians. Still, such a lovely final moment when Kirk makes it clear that they’re taking Alexander with them. This reaction was most lovely. And the congestion issue was no bother. These things happen. I’ve said this before, if it ever reaches a point where you can’t breathe and/or are sick enough to prevent filming, then I would rather you get rest and recuperation in. Otherwise, if you happen to sniffle throughout a reaction, it makes me no never mind. Again, a most lovely reaction, Jess. Thank you.

This episode gets a bad rap. So many people talk about the ridiculous stunts Kirk and Spock are forced to do as if it's just more of the campiness that this entire season is admittedly full of. But this time, the entire point is that it's horribly degrading and embarrassing, and makes the villains look horrible that this is the best thing they can think to do with their godlike powers, leading to an incredibly sweet comeuppance. Also, huge kudos to Leonard Nimoy for so clearly portraying how PAINFUL it is for Spock to be forced to laugh like this.

Seconded! If you need rest, Jess, please just take it easy! Btw: Your Third Doctor review was wonderful.

Shatner and Nichols supposedly crossed their eyes every time the director tried to get a take of the kiss not happening, forcing the editors to use a take where they did it.

As Thomas said this episode was a groundbreaking moment in TV history. I was interested to see your reaction to it for that reason and I know how much it bothers you to see people being forced to do things against their will. I was surprised that you were not bothered so much at first when Kirk and Spock were forced to do things though as you said it may have been due to the acting. Then when Uhura and Nurse Chapel were brought into the mix your reaction was more like I thought it would be. The interracial kiss as Thomas said was one of or I thought THE first one on TV. If I remember correctly many stations did not air the episode because of it. That is where American culture was at that time and keeping that history in mind is important when looking at it with a mindset of current day. I have not been watching your classic Who reactions due to lack of time, but I plan to at some point. I know you said that was where you were going to discuss your allergies not being allergies, so I want to find that episode and see what you said. I hope it is something that will allow you to treat it so you can feel better.

I can't help but find this episode annoying, especially as I feel my neuralgia playing up.
