The weirder episodes of Star Trek are often a gamble. This one was right up my alley. The whole time I’m watching the episode I’m wanting to narrate with my best Bela Lugosi impression. I’m told this episode aired days before Halloween, so, yes, this is a Halloween episode. That castle would make a most excellent summer home. It is sad that Spock is unaware of Halloween customs and traditions, I agree, and it does beg the question of does the Enterprise not celebrate Halloween in any real way? If so, that’s a little depressing. The reason for Chekov’s hair being what it is in this episode was because this was the first episode filmed for the season, and Walter Koenig had yet to fully grow his hair out for it to be the Davy Jones type hairstyle. As a result, he wore a hairpiece for the episode. Still looks more convincing than Shatner’s hairpiece over the years. I love Spock’s line when asked for comment he dryly retorts, “Very bad poetry, Captain.” Sylvia is certainly a memorable Star Trek villain. I really enjoyed Antoinette Bower’s performance as Sylvia. Theodore Marcuse as Korob was also great. Sadly, about a month after this aired, he was killed in a car crash. Seeing this episode again, my first thought upon seeing Korob was, “He looks a little bit like Anton LaVey. No idea how deliberate that is, but that’s the impression I’m getting.” When they mention a duty to the old ones I thought, “You mean Cthulhu?” I, too, would be curious to know if the Federation has some type of jewelry racket on the side. I was so very much looking forward to your reaction to the fashion show moment, and it was definitely a highlight of the reaction. I had a similar reaction when Bones started fighting, I said, “Damn it man! You’re a doctor, not a gladiator!” Though I acknowledge that this isn’t perhaps the most popular Star Trek episode, it’s one that I greatly enjoyed. And though you admit it did not become one of your favorites, I’m glad to see that if nothing else, you enjoyed the episode. I’d say by the way, the cough-drop worked splendidly for you throughout the reaction. Even if it hadn’t, it wouldn’t have bothered me all that much. I very much enjoyed your reaction to this episode, Jess, thanks.

Regarding my Sighisoara lineage, this reminds me - vicariously - of the "old country". And the Earthdate reads October 27th 1967. Just before Hallowe'en. As Spock might say, "Hmm. Most satisfying!"
