The really painful part here is the escalation. The first two games were individual and everyone had a chance to get through. Here, half the people ARE going to die, by the other half’s hands.

Going into this episode, I was keeping track of the numbers that the characters are assigned. And I had the list that was posted in the comment on last week’s reaction. I was saying for example, “All right, number 456 is the main guy, and his name is Gi-hun. Number 001’s the older gentleman, and his name is Il-nam. Number 067’s pickpocket knife girl, she’s Sae-byeok. 199: the strong and dependable guy from Pakistan, he’s Ali. 212’s the lady who’s good at everything except the things she’s not good at, she’s Mi-nyeo. Ok. Ok, Ok I think I- I think getting a good handle on the names.” This was further helped by the characters sharing names in the episode itself. Yeah, it was a chilling moment when it’s revealed that there’s no repercussions against killing outside of the games. It initially struck me as odd that Deok-su's gang was able to obtain second helpings of food, considering how heavily monitored everyone is. It therefore makes sense that the people running the games were counting on the nighttime massacre. It recalls my favorite line from The Mist, “As a species we're fundamentally insane. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill one another. Why do you think we invented politics and religion?” I loved it when Il-nam comes up with the strategy for the tug of war, and I was impressed with said strategy that I said, “That’s actually a pretty good strategy.” I’d say it’s safe to presume that most if not all the characters we’re following will not survive the show. I don’t know that for a fact as I’ve only seen up to this episode, but I don’t think it’s an unreasonable presumption. If Gi-hun's team wins the tug of war, which seems likely, I’m very much on board with Mi-nyeo getting revenge on Deok-su. You mentioned at the very end of your post episode thoughts that your best friend is epileptic, and that the one sequence would not be good for her to see. I am not epileptic, myself, still, that scene was really bad with the strobe light effect that I was saying, “Jeezaloo! Ok! They weren’t kidding with the warning before the episode.” So, when you brought up about your best friend, I’m nodding my head and agreeing with you in that it would not be a good idea for your best friend to watch this episode. Or at least that specific sequence. Great reaction to this episode. I’m looking forward to what comes next.
