Star Trek: TOS 1x18 Full Reaction - Google Drive

I’ll be honest, for this episode, I most looked forward to your reaction to Kirk’s fight with the Gorn. Rewatching this, I was almost rolling on the floor giggling at how silly it was. A lot of Trekkies, even the ones who have followed Star Trek for over half a century now, will freely admit the fight sequence is completely ridiculous. The moral quandary that is raised in this episode is interesting. I personally side more with Spock, but I can’t altogether be against Kirk in this situation. I personally would have said to Kirk, “Maybe we should stop and figure out what they want. What is their motivation?” Other things I’d like to comment on, theoretically I would say yes, Sulu would most likely be in charge of the Enterprise if contact was cut off, and I agree with you in that I’d be fully on board with that. I agree with your observation that the earpieces that Spock and Uhura have look very uncomfortable. A small moment of your reaction that I got a real big kick out of was your mimicking the dramatic head turns. This was a very fun reaction.

In a routine situation, Kirk can designate whoever he wants to take over when he leaves the bridge or the ship. Spock is first officer, so he is the default if he is staying on board. If both are leaving, then Kirk would pick from whoever is on the bridge at the time. Sulu being a line officer would be the usual choice. Now if there was a non-routine situation where there might be a threat to the ship, the landing party, or Kirk and Spock are both missing or incapacitated... the most senior officer aboard would be the one to designate or assume command, and that would normally fall to Scotty. In this case with Sulu left in charge and all of a sudden in a combat situation, Kirk could have ordered him to turn over command to Scotty if he felt Sulu couldn't handle it. Barring that, it's Sulu's show... unless Sulu voluntarily passes command to Scotty, or Scotty relieves Sulu (if he felt that Sulu was doing such a bad job that leaving him in charge would threaten the ship and crew).

That outdoor set is used multiple times in the series, it's Vasquez Rocks in Southern California (it is also the basis of the art for Pride Rock in the Lion King). You'll see it again in the future. The fight scene is silly in a modern light, but try being a stunt man in a 1960's special effects rubber suit that's hard to see out of, in the heat of Southern California, trying to act like he's fighting. These days they'd just do motion capture and CGI so it'd be a lot faster and more realistic.
