Very excited to see this one. Unfortunately, as I write this the news about Noel Clarke is gaining momentum and if all - or even some - of the allegations against him are true it's a sad day for Dr Who fandom.

Thanks for another great reaction (To anyone who hasn't seen this yet - read no more until you have lol!). On Liz, the in story explanation is that she went back to Cambridge to finish her research (you were making a point at the time). In reality, I think her departure was two fold. Caroline John who played Liz, fell pregnant during her time on the show. Also, Barry Letts, the producer of the time, felt the Doctor needed a companion who asks the Doctor a lot of questions (as a stand in for every first time viewer) rather than someone of similar intelligence & savvy as him. Very sadly he chose not to renew her contract, which sucks really because she should have had a farewell story. Glad you are enjoying this one - certainly a lot to take in!

This story exhibits a strong tonal shift compared to those in Series 7. It zips along and is played almost like a cartoon at times (the 'city businessman' Time Lord,e.g.) I find it a lot of fun after the occasionally downbeat ponderousness of Series 7. It really feels as though the flamboyance of the Third Doctors dress-sense has now been matched by the style of the show.

While I do understand why they wanted to change the companion to more of an audience surrogate character that the Doctor could explain the plot to, I do agree that it is a great shame that Liz didn't get the chance to continue for longer or get a proper send-off. She's a character I really like - one of my favourite of the companions, I'd say. Still, I believe it didn't work out too badly for Caroline John as she discovered she was pregnant and may have been unable to continue anyway. It has also given rise to an enormous sub-genre of Doctor Who fan fiction - "Liz Shaw Departure Stories"!
