I get the sense that Dean has a savior complex. The average person is able to comprehend they are not the be-all, end-all, the /only one/ capable of saving the day. Dean has the tendency to believe he's the onlyyyyy one able to save the day. It's very unhealthy, for sure. This is a great episode. I'm always curious how Sam's wish-life would have looked, and how quickly he'd break free. On a lighter note, I always die laughing at the photoshopped pictures of JDM with them at Mary's house haha.

Even with a full 13 seasons after this, I still think this is one of my favourite episodes of the entire series. I can't wait to watch this reaction tonight :)

I don't think he believes he is the only one. But he and Sam have a self-imposed duty. It's not whether you can, but whether you will. Once you know about the evil in the world, are you the sort of person who will do nothing about it? Dean is not. Many people would go "not my problem", or "I can't do anything about it". That's the difference. That's what makes these guys heroes. Not superpowers, but sense of duty, of honour.

Delighted to see you reacting again. Love this episode, and Jensen put in such a great performance. So sad that in this life where his dearest wish is granted, it is at the expense of the relationship that means the most to him in his life (i.e. with Sam). When Dean dismissed the idea of Sam helping him, I don't think he was saying that Sam was not someone he could rely on, it was that *this* Sam (i.e. djinn world Sam) could not help, because unlike the real Sam, he was pretty useless!

Well, in this episode Dean gets to see that unless he and Sam do something about it, all the people they saved die. He does not think he is the only one who *can* act, he thinks he's the only one who *does*. Without him and Sam, clearly nobody else does it. It reminds me of Terry Pratchett's ideas - some people go "there's a problem, what's someone going to do about it?" But the person who makes a difference says "there's a problem, what am I going to do about it"? Except, being a great author, he is way more funny and articulate than I am and I can't be bothered to hunt the lines down!

I know what Dean thinks, but I don't think he knows himself v well. What he thinks is not the same as the reason why he does something.
