Toasted Toad

I like this episode - like you say, it's thought provoking. It tends to get a bit forgotten among the more brilliant episodes of the season, but it does have a lot to offer. I like how we see Dean still taking care of Sam, making sure he doesn't do anything he'll regret, while nevertheless protecting against a potential criminal, and we see Sam recognizing that Dean's advice is sensible. They need to know for sure, therefore despite his reluctance and wish for it to be an angel, Sam does a proper investigation. I think it's important to understand that, despite some appearances, Supernatural is 'secular', so it doesn't matter what religious views or education you might have. The same as SPN has its own take on vampires, wendigos etc, it has its own take on religion (after all, ghosts themselves are in part an element of myth and part religion). They will use various myths as a jumping off point and then create their own lore. We've already had a pagan god (the scarecrow), ghosts, spiritual healing which turned out to be a bound reaper. All these are elements coming from various religions, but SPN will explain whatever lore they're taking as 'true' for their purposes. If it matches any particular beliefs, they're always going to reserve the right to swerve off and do their own thing so long as it stays, as much as possible, within their 'canon' universe. Does that make sense? I hope so!
