I feel like a broken record, but once again, I love hearing your comments at the end and how perceptive you are. Huge episode for Dean - before, he was pretty sure his father had died for him. Here, he finds out that, not only did he die, but his soul is in Hell. And you're right, Dean simply cannot shake off guilt. Which is part of why Iike him so much. For all the bravado, he's an honourable man. And I like the twist on the guy who made the deal for the life of his wife. We of course initially assume that his deal was to get the girl. When they discover it was in fact to save the girl, our instinct is immediately to feel more sympathetic towards him. And I think Sam does. But Dean doesn't. He just gets even angrier. He sees it still as being selfish. The guy did not do it for the sake of his wife, but for his own sake - because he didn't want to be without her. I think not many people would leap to that conclusion, but he's not wrong. Not if you think about it.
