Your summation of Clara is absolutely spot on! (i.e it's exactly the same as mine). Her character changes with each season depending on what purpose she is intended to serve. I don't dislike her (she's too pretty for that!);but she's just kind of 'meh'.

Interesting that you mention about how it might have been nice to see Martha in the SJA. The series two finale was actually written with Martha in mind, but Freema Agyeman was cast as a regular on the UK version of Law & Order, so became unavailable. They then replaced her with Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier at quite short notice.
