Cabin in the Woods #1 for sure. Blew me away the first time I saw it :)

Dave Hampton

Yup, Cabin in the Woods is my #1 as well. So good. Scream is my #2. After that it gets tricky but a mix of Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Evil Dead 2 and recently saw and would add The Conjuring. I have not seen Tucker and Dale I might check that out.

Dave Ford

Absolutely right about Psycho - some real innovative story telling by Hitchcock, and a great performance by Anthony Perkins - still holds up today.

What a fun list! Especially happy that you included Tucker and Dale vs Evil. I don't think i could narrow down my top horrors to just a top 5. Perhaps a top 5 from each decade. Seeing this list with all it's deconstructive ans spoofy horrors, and knowing your love for apocalyptic zombies, i simply have to recommend a film for you, and anyone else, of course. Peter Jackson, the mild-mannered kiwi of The Lord of the Rings fame, made the most full-on, hysterical, bat-shit insane zombie movie ever in 1991. The original title was Braindead, but it got renamed in USA to Dead Alive. Like Tucker and Dale, there is a laugh with every drop of blood in this film, and even though Braindead is one of the bloodiest and goriest movies ever made (the last 30 minutes is one long hilarious zombie massacre), it is completely non-sadistic. Everything is played for laughs.
