Do our demons come to visit us? Bid them attend us.", The King, "The King's Demons" We like a historical - and the first featuring a known historical figure since ... er ... since forever. Wow, I think it could be all the way back to "The Gunfighters" - is that right? "Oh, my dear Doctor, you have been naive.", The Master, "The King's Demons" Again we get a "Estram" = "Master" misdirection - oh, he's tricky - but you can't fool Jess! People have speculated that this is much more of a Meddling Monk scheme than a plan of the Master. And I agree - it really feels like a sequel to the Meddling Monk and his historical meddling in 1066. (I know Peter Butterworth had died a few years earlier in 1979 but a nice regeneration could work.) We like a cute android - but I don't think Kamelion is. The Kamelion prop was very impressive in the demonstration but had lots and lots of problems during the filming. Nice to see Peter and Anthony Ainley get a chance to do some fencing. I am strongly reminded, as were you, of 3 here - especially fighting the Master in "The Sea Devils" but we can also recall 4 in "The Masque of Mandragora", and "The Androids of Tara". And I guess 10 in "The Christmas Invasion". Do we count 12 and his spoon? "Can you not call on Hell?", "I could, but then so could you, with a better chance of success, I fancy.", Hugh and Turlough, "The King's Demons" We have another Classic Who actor who later appeared in New Who - Christopher Villiers as Hugh returned to New Who in the "Mummy on the Orient Express" story. "No wonder they forced him to sign Magna Carta. Bet there was something in it about underheated housing.", Tegan, "The King's Demons" And Tegan disguises herself as a yeti. When Queen Victoria knighted Rose and the Doctor, we Classic Who viewers were reminded on this story. Of course, here the Doctor is knighted by a fake king. But the other situation just lead to Torchwood problems. Of the Classic Who two-parters so far: "The Edge of Destruction" - Susan with scissors, "The Rescue" - Vicki's intro, "The Sontaran Experiment" - Sarah in a yellow coat, "Black Orchid" - Peter plays cricket and this one, my favorite would probably be "Black Orchid". "I don't want to go home.", "Of course you do. You don't have to pretend. It's a shame, of course. There were many wonders I wanted to show you.", Tegan and the Doctor, "The King's Demons"

Yes, the Gunfighters, unless the Laird of McLaren counts in The Highlanders (but he would've fought on the opposite side, in reality). It bears about as much relation to the real historical figure/events as The Gunfighters' Clantons, Earps, Doc Holliday, Johnny Ringo etc! The Doctor always narrowly missed Leonardo on screen (Masque of Mandragora, City of Death).

The difference from the Meddling Monk is that the Master wants to disrupt the histories of most/all major worlds in the Universe for selfish ends (starting with Earth as it's the Doctor's favourite), whereas the Monk thought he was "improving" Earth's history albeit by immoral means. Though he happily did selfish things too like the bank interest scam.

Apropos of not very much, but Frank Windsor (Sir Ranulf Fitzwilliam here) went to the same junior school as me; though more than quite a few years earlier. He would often pay a visit at various special occasions, when he could. Nice bloke.
