Show of hands, who else briefly got their hopes up that the doctor who saved Picard would be a surprise Beverly cameo? Of course, it helped that I had no idea of the behind the scenes issues the first time I saw this one. A couple fun then-unknown actors among the doctors, with Tzi Ma of Dante's Peak and 24, and Daniel Benzali of Murder One. The reveal of Picard's artificial heart also makes this a deceptively important episode, as it will lead to several important developments all the way through the final season of Picard, and in the meantime his own mixed feelings on it are some great character work of the kind badly needed in this season. And then there's, let's all just sigh together, the Pakleds. And the weird thing is, they didn't need to be this bad. The scavenged tech was an idea for when the Ferengi were supposed to be the major villainous race, so fobbing that off onto another species to take their place could have gone somewhere interesting. But if anything, this episode immediately broke their potential even harder than the Ferengi got it. It's just such a bizarre plot twist that they'd been pulling the Enterprise in with a lie...but their behavior wasn't at all a part of that lie and they really, truly are that stupid. No amount of "Well, they didn't have Picard at the helm" can make the crew look better for having such a hard time against these guys, and it's very much for the best that they never tried to do anything else with them. Though more recently, they became yet another case of an awkward early TNG writing choice that got rescued by Lower Decks, in this case the biggest of all by giving them a whole story arc making it much more believable how dangerous they are, in the same sense as the classic chess saying that the hardest person to play is a total amateur, because you can never predict when they'll do something they didn't know is insanely stupid, and now you have no defense against it because your brain leaped over the very possibility that you'd need one. It's a blast every time they turn up, and I'm hoping to get one more bit of them in the upcoming final season.

Quite the episode with the two strong character focuses that I’m glad you enjoyed save for the one aspect for obvious reasons. I knew that the Geordi spotlight would yield a strong reaction from you, Jess. It feels like the show expected the duplicitous little turds’ duplicitous nature to be more of a shock. But we are skeptical Slytherin sorts, Jess, and we smelled something rotten in the state of Denmark early. Riker sure as shit didn’t. I think the writers made him lose a brain cell or two to allow the plot to happen, and I agree with your criticism that his assessment of the warnings felt out-of-character. It was known that once you knew Geordi was being preyed upon by the Pakleds, that if he wasn’t returned safely, knowing your intractable and adamantine ironclad rule that you would rain down an ungodly fucking firestorm upon them. They’d have to call the fucking federation and get a fucking BINDING resolution to keep you from fucking destroying them, and it would STILL not be enough. That warmed the heart: your reaction to Worf’s worry for his friend, Geordi. I too observed how Worf had valid points, and I said, “Guys, listen, LISTEN to Worf.” Then later, I was bellowing that Deanna be listened to. I love LeVar selling Geordi catching on to Riker’s ruse with the strong, “Wha... Oooooh, right.” and proceeds to run with the chicanery which saves the day. I see the comments made that tell me I was correct in recalling that Sonya never appeared past this episode, at least not in this show. This combined with it being commented last week that the planned Geordi/Sonya ship never sadly never got to be with this show leaves me somewhat despondent as I like Sonya and was very much looking forward to more of her. It is nice, though that in her last scene, Sonya does the WORK in helping get Geordi back, and is quite cool under fire whilst doing it. So, if nothing else, I got that moment. I’ll take it. Now to Picard’s plotline which is quite appropriate today as it is the birthday of our dear beloved Sir Patrick Stewart who turns eighty-four, God bless him. Whilst you say that there shouldn’t be much worry for his image with the crew, I relate as well to not wanting personal health scares and problems to be known for all the world to see. You and I are similar in that when struggling, we tend to keep it close to the chest, particularly when we don’t entirely know what we’re struggling with. So, I’m with you on the “I get it.” energy with Picard wanting to be mum on his heart problems. Concerning the observations of silent travel companions, depending on travel companions, I suspect I’d be like Peter Stormare in Fargo, likely chiming in with “Where is pancakes house?” every now and then. Little drama that Picard would live, though a nice Tzi Ma cameo, liked seeing him. Oh, how I WISH they got Beverly to perform the lifesaving surgery, and thus, providing us with such a beautiful moment. We don’t get this of course, because the showrunner was a stupid jerk. I mean, what the FUCK was he doing firing Gates thus ROBBING us of such a great Picard and Beverly moment!? THE ASSHOLE!! The big STUPID, sorry. Now I’m venting. Apologies. Addressing your one accurate observation: The broken heart most CERTAINLY coincided with Beverly’s departure! That is canon! Make it so! And I heartily concur with preferring the Picard and Beverly bonding over the Picard and Wesley bonding, sweet though it is as it is very reminiscent of strong father and son bonding. Shared thoughts that it is good for Wesley to hear Picard share a story from his past where he wasn’t the paragon that is Picard. Certainly, it is strongly relatable being in Wesley’s shoes of escorting Picard to his appointment and making sure things go all right. A familiar experience. I found it sweet when Wesley notes that Picard would make a good father. He’s still got time. After all, Charlie Chaplin had babies when he was seventy-three. On the other hand, he was too old to pick them up. But then again, with the advances in modern medical science in the twenty-fourth century, maybe that wouldn’t be such a concern here. I relate SO strongly to Picard when he cuts the applause short, I’d yell, “DON’T do that.” And in response to Picard saying about the rumors of his brush with death being exaggerated, you say, “Understood, Samuel.” So, yeah, not the most groundbreaking episode, yet a nice one all the same, leading to your lovely reaction, Jess, which was much appreciated, thank you.

For a travelling companion on a long voyage, I think I would like Zeb or Babu Frik. Thats nice to hear that its Patrick Stewart's birthday, I've actually just come off of a TNG episode with him in aged makeup, and he looks better in real life at his advanced years, than what 90's tv makeup made him out to be! Though perhaps I could blame it on the sun in the episode, like what happens with Obi-Wan on Tatooine and his fair skin. Picard and Wesley connecting and the story of young reckless Picard, makes that a solid back up story to frankly rather silly, main story with those god-awful Pakleds. I agree that it would have been a nice touch for Picard to wake up with Beverly having been the one treating him, I know I've thought about how nice that would be occasionally! However Diana does her best as Pulaski, and I like the banter between her and Picard in this one, with his stubbornness!!

Raising my hand lightning quick. Good to see I’m not the only one there. I guess I had a shoddy memory of this episode as watching this again, my heart acted faster than my brain as it latched onto the idea, “Beverly? Is she going to save her dear Jean-Luc?” My brain catches up, saying, “Tom. You very well know that Beverly does not appear in this season.” to which I yell, “LET ME DREAM, GODDAMN IT!!” It is an odd set-up with the Pakleds. I don’t mind the idea that everyone thinking they’re some kind of idiots, but nobody knows it’s all just a big facade, though they are still dim. I’m fine with that. I just would have preferred better writing. I reiterate my thought that Riker acted stupidly here both when not listening to Worf, (a pattern that will be long repeated throughout this series as I recall,) and most CERTAINLY when he doesn’t give Deanna’s words of warning the serious consideration. I had heard something about the Packleds returning in Lower Decks. Nice to hear they make better showings there. I suspect if Jess sees that, she might have a favorable response, especially seeing as they probably don’t go after Geordi again. Then again, like me, Jess is a Slytherin; we can hold grudges for a long, LONG time.
